Impediment

For interpretation of measuring results, calibration characteristics obtained on the samples in advance is used in the above instruments. However, if number of impediment factors increases, the interpretation of the signals detected becomes more complicated in many times. This fact causes the position that the object thickness T and crack length I are not taken into consideration in the above-mentioned instruments. It is considered that measuring error in this case is not significant. 

In the rubbery plateau, a new impediment to movement must be overcome entanglements along the polymer chain. In discussing the effects of entanglements in Chap. 2, we compared them to crosslinks. Is it any surprise, then, that rubbery behavior similar to that shown by cross-linked elastomers characterizes this region ... 

Effects on Visible Smoke. Smoke is a main impediment to egress from a burning building. Although some examples are known where specific phosphoms flame retardants increased smoke in small-scale tests, other instances are reported where the presence of the retardant reduced smoke. The effect appears to be a complex function of burning conditions and of other ingredients in the formulation (153,156,157). In a carehil Japanese study, ammonium phosphate raised or lowered the smoke from wood depending on pyrolysis temperature (158). Where the phosphoms flame retardant functions by char enhancement, lower smoke levels are likely to be observed. 

Physical and Chemical Properties. Ammonium nitrate is a white, crystalline salt, df = 1.725, that is highly soluble in water, as shown in Table 3 (7). Although it is very hygroscopic, it does not form hydrates. This hygroscopic nature compHcates its usage in explosives, and until about 1940, was a serious impediment to its extensive use in fertilizers. The soHd salt picks up water from air when the vapor pressure of water exceeds the vapor pressure of a saturated aqueous ammonium nitrate solution (see Table 4). 

The observation that certain kinds of parallel-computing architectures best support only certain kinds of problems seems to be general. The further observation that interprocessor communication can be the primary impediment to parallel performance is also general. As of this writing, any hope of a truly general purpose parallel computer seems to be remote. The best hope may He in software efforts that describe problems at higher levels of abstraction, which can then be ported and optimized for different parallel architectures (22). 

UF Membranes Design of UF membranes prizes high retention, hydrolytic stabihty, and good process flux. Since fouling is the principal impediment to flux, and membranes which are hydrophilic gener ly foul less rapidly, there is competition between the truly stable hydrophobic membranes and the less-fouhng-prone hydrophilic ones. 

Impediments to water flow resulting from inadequate equipment design or lodgement of foreign objects in the tubes can exercise a dramatic effect on the erosion-corrosion process. Much of this influence is linked to the creation of turbulence and the simple increase in fluid velocity past obstructions. The importance of these factors is quickly recognized when the phenomenon of threshold velocity is considered. 

Sandy Soils. The particles in sandy soils are relatively large, with correspondingly large spaces between them. Because these soils are also fairly homogeneous, water moves freely through much of the soil matrix. Any nitrate that is in the soil, whether from fertilizer or from microbial activity, is likely to be carried through the soil slowly but surely with little impediment. A sandy soil above an aquifer is usually seen as a threat to the quality of the water in the aquifer. 

Through radiation also, the arc plasma di.ssipates a part of its heat which supplements the quenching. But this is too meagre a contribution, as heat dissipation occurs only through the outer surface of the arc plasma. Nevertheless, it is the major cause of gas impediment giving rise to the phenomenon of clogging, discussed later, and which helps in arc extinction. 

In the previous section the interaction of the plasma particle flux with the surface of graphite was discussed. However, the fate of the implanted particles (most importantly deuterium and tritium) following their impact with the graphite surface is also an important issue, and is seen by some as the major impediment to graphite s use as a PFM [58], Quantification of the problem, and determination of possible mitigating steps, is complicated by experimental data which can vary by orders of magnitude [59-66] as reviewed by Wilson [67]. 

Equation (11) accurately describes longitudinal diffusion in a capillary column where there is no impediment to the flow from particles of packing. The last published report of the IPCC acknowledges that the single largest uncertainty in determining the climate sensitivity to either natural or anthropogenic changes are clouds and their effects on radiation and their role in the hydrological cycle. .. At the present time, weaknesses in the parameterization of cloud formation and dissipation are probably the main impediment to improvements in the simulation of cloud effects on climate (IPCC, 1995, p. 346).
