Imaging procedures

Each of the endoscopic imaging procedures is relatively risk free and painless when performed by competent and weU-trained individuals using a local anesthetic. Eetoscopy has the highest risk. There is a 10% increased probabiUty of premature deUvery and 10% higher fetal loss rate. [Pg.49]

The isotope molybdenum-99 is produced in large quantity as the precursor to technetium-99y, a radionucleide used in numerous medical imaging procedures such as those of bone and the heart (see Medical imaging technology). The molybdenum-99 is either recovered from the fission of uranium or made from lighter Mo isotopes by neutron capture. Typically, a Mo-99 cow consists of MoO adsorbed on a lead-shielded alumina column. The TcO formed upon the decay of Mo-99 by P-decay, = 66 h, has less affinity for the column and is eluted or milked and either used directly or appropriately chemically derivatized for the particular diagnostic test (100). [Pg.478]

Mysteries such as this attract young people to science. Nuclear physics, however, tends to turn people off Nuclear power plant malfunctions and atomic bombs are frightening. Nevertheless, humankind has greatly benefited from scientific investigations of the nucleus. Science s hard-won knowledge of the atomic nucleus is used extensively in medicine, from imaging procedures such as positron emission tomography (PET) to radiation therapy, which has saved the lives of many cancer patients. [Pg.37]

Endoscopic approaches are typically used and may include colonoscopy, proctosigmoidoscopy, or possibly upper GI endoscopy in patients with suspected CD. Endoscopy is useful for determining the disease distribution, pattern and depth of inflammation, and to obtain mucosal biopsy specimens. Supplemental information from imaging procedures, such as computed tomography (CT), abdominal x-ray, abdominal ultrasound, or intestinal barium studies may provide evidence of complications such as obstruction, abscess, perforation, or colonic dilation.3... [Pg.285]

In order to check our imaging procedure we have to first stimulate the fluorescence emitted by excited polarized (and unpolarized) Na2 wavepackets. In these simulation we assume that the molecule, which exists initially in a (Xvg,jg) Na2 (X1 5 ) vib-rotational state, is excited by a pulse to a superposition of (xs) vib-rotational states belonging to the Na2(B IIu) electronic-states. [Pg.803]

Radiophannaceuticals are almost ideal diagnostic tools because radioisotope tracers do not alter body physiology, and they permit external monitoring with minimal instrumentation. Presently, there are three major areas of nuclear medicine (1) physiological function studies, (2) radionuclide imaging procedures, and (3) therapeutic techniques. [Pg.1412]

Radionuclide Imaging Procedures. Brain tumors can be detected by external counting of radionuclides, a procedure introduced into general clinical use in the late 1950s. A significant advance in brain tumor imaging was the introduction of the gamma camera, which permitted more rapid studies with multiple views, as well as dynamic cerebral blood flow assessment. [Pg.1412]

The origins of nuclear medicine date to 1901, when the French physician Henri Danlos first used radium in the treatment of a tuberculous skin lesion. Since that time, uses of radioactivity have become a crucial part of modem medical care, both diagnostic and therapeutic. Current nuclear techniques can be grouped into three classes (1) in vivo procedures, (2) therapeutic procedures, and (3) imaging procedures. [Pg.975]

Once a particular food constituent has been characterized and/or identified by spectral analysis, it becomes a relatively simple matter to quantify the material further by mapping its distribution or by quantifying the material by associated imaging procedures. [Pg.252]

This patient required hemodialysis for ALPE. Delayed CT and a bone scan with MDP in the recovery phase showed patchy lesions (these imaging procedures were performed in conjunction with another patient with myoglobin uric acute renal failure due to a malignant syndrome). On July 19, 1999, the patient fell into the water while fishing in a mountain stream, and was carried about 100 m in a few minutes while struggling all the time. As a precaution, he was admitted to a local clinic overnight. There were no abnormal laboratory data. However, at 0300 hours on July 21, he attended the Emergency Outpatient Unit of our hospital with severe bilateral loin... [Pg.46]

Aqua complexes of Gd(III) with stabilizing ligands such as DTPA and DOTA have found extensive uses in clinical magnetic resonance imaging procedures [112,113]. These contrastenhancing agents work on the principle of altering the relaxation time (Ti) of water molecules... [Pg.264]

Herpfer and Jeng [146] used streak particle imaging velocimetry for planar measurement of droplet velocities and sizes. They encountered problems due to out-of-focus effects of the PIV imaging procedure. [Pg.184]
