Image analysis software, automated

Quantitative analysis of these images is accomplished in the same manner as for any microscope image, depending on the detail of analysis desired. Automated image analysis software can be used to provide a variety of information. Crystal phase volume (solid fat content UNIT D3.i) can be obtained by counting dark pixels (according to some empirical threshold factor). 

A typical static sessile drop is created by a microsyringe with an automated plunger to place a tiny drop of water on the polymer surface. Ideally, the polymer sample should be in a humidity chamber to minimize the water evaporation that would change the shape, and thus the C A of the droplet. The shape of the droplet is captured by a camera and CA is measured by an image analysis software [30]. 

CellProfiler and CellProfiler Analyst are free Open Source software for automated image analysis, data visualization, and machine learning. Versions for Mac, Windows, and Linux are available and both software can be downloaded at http //www.cellprofiler. org. CellProfiler was developed by Anne Carpenter and Thouis Jones in the laboratory of David Sabatini at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and by Polina Golland at the CSAIL of the MIT.
