Idea generation

The energy audit has seven components as-it-is balance, field survey, equipment tests, checking against optimum design, idea-generation meeting, evaluation, and foUow-up. 

Idea-Generation Meeting. This meeting has the foUowiag guidelines gather people with expertise and experience, discuss the as-it-is balance for each area, record all ideas, and assign foUow-up responsibiUties. 

However, when a problem is particularly difficult or only limited time exists, consider a new and imaginative approach with techniques that previously generated creative ideas. First generate as many ideas as possible that may be even remotely related to the problem. During the idea-generating phase it is of critical importance to be totally positive no ideas are bad. Evaluation comes later, so do not attempt to provide creativity and evaluation at the same time it could be damaging to your creativity. Look for quantity of ideas, not quality, at this point. Now all ideas are good the best will become obvious later.

Although the steps involved in normative creativity are likely to follow a fairly standard pattern, many points in the process demand an imaginative input. But because the normative creative process is usually well structured, it is possible, Majaro suggests, to utilize structured idea generation techniques, for example brain-storming sessions. He also lists quality circles as among the structured techniques appropriate for use in this context. 

To summarize the differences between these two modes of creativity, in normative creativity idea generation is focused on a defined problem. It is results oriented. In exploratory creativity, by contrast, the idea generation process is directed outward towards a futuristic dream world with the hope of striking gold at the end of the cycle .

Two examples are included here to highlight how both LEAP1 and LEAP2 have been used, routinely, by chemists for idea generation and lead hopping.

Perseverance is all about Edison s famous 99 percent perspiration. Implementing a solution often requires more creative effort than coming up with the solution in the first place. Only a few people are directly involved in the idea generation everyone else who has to support the implementation will have to be convinced.

While QSAR approaches (in all their forms) are by far the most common ways to capture and explore SAR trends, a number of other approaches are possible. Although they are not quantitative, they can be useful as idea generators. ... 

In summary, an extensive array of computational methods allows exploration of SAR trends at varying levels of detail. Whilst the SWOT technique is most commonly used for business analysis, where potential competitive advantage can be identified from the fit between the company s strengths and upcoming opportunities, it can also be used in creative idea generation. Looking at the Opportunities and Threats in a more divergent rather than an analytical mindset is likely to produce some ideas, which can be exploited in an innovative manner. 

Everybody can develop some kills in creativity by thinking laterally and by using specific techniques for idea generation. 

It is common practice within R D to use tools to aid or stimulate the insight stage [C-ll]. When using such techniques the principal objective must be to create the conditions, climate and environment, which are conducive to people having insights into a problem. Therefore, to ensure success when using any of the methods it is essential to separate the evaluation procedure from the process of idea generation.
