A typical representative of geminal diphosphonic acids is 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP, DEQUEST 2010), which is often employed in practical applications. As shown in Eigure 3.192, this compound may be analyzed in the same run with other aminopolyphosphonic acids.

A simple way of preparing hydroxyethylidene-diphosphonic acid which is an excellent chelating agent for Mg and Ca-ions consists in the reaction of white phosphorus with oxygen in acetic acid first at 80 °C and then heating the mixture to 150 °C i). 

The active ingredients are diphosphonic acids - dicarboxypropane diphosphonic acid (DPD), hydroxymethylene diphosphonic acid (HDP or HMDP), hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (EHDP), methylene diphosphonic acid (MDP) - or their sodium salts. As stabilizers are used N-(4-aminobenzoyl)-L-glutaminic acid, gentisic acid (2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid), ascorbic acid, or carbamide. For reduction of Tc-pertechne-tate to lower oxidation states, tin(II) chloride and tin(II) fluoride are employed.

Organic phosphorus-containing compounds (mono and dialkyl esters(C2 — Cio) of phosphoric acid, hydroxyethylidene-diphosphonic acid, nitrile-tris (methylene phosphonic acid) are mainly used as ingredients of polymer coatings. They are related to Cl of the anodic-passivating type [63]. 

Preservatives. To preserve the unsaturated component from oxidation, antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) are added at a 50-100 ppm level in the formulations [43]. Chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetet-raacetic acid (EDTA) and hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (EHDP) are added in the formulation to complex the metal ions, which when free, accelerate the oxidation process of unsaturated components [44]. 

A useful nitrogen-free sequestrant for H2O2 and peracids is HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid). In general, solutions containing both peracids and free hydrogen peroxide are more prone to catalytic decomposition than either component alone [60], since the two peroxides themselves represent a redox couple.

Phosphonates, especially aminotri(methylenephosphonic acid) (ATMP) and l-hydroxyethylidene-l,l-diphosphonic acid (HEDP).
