Hydrogen sulfide separated from natural gas by amine scrubbing is a highly odorous, toxic, low boiling gas and for these reasons is difficult to store or ship in large quantities. Hence, a Claus unit is closely associated with each amine scrubber to convert the hydrogen sulfide gas product of the scrubber to elemental sulfur. This is much easier and safer to store and ship in large quantities. [Pg.265]

Other sulfur compounds such as thiourea, ammonium dithiocarbamate, or hydrogen sulfide also lead to 2-mercaptothiazoles. Thus thiourea has been used in the syntheses of 4,5-dimethyl (369) and 4-aryl-2-mercapto-thiazoles (Table 11-30) (519). The reactions were carried out by condensing the ia -thiocyanatoketones with thiourea in alcohol and water acidified with hydrochloric acid. By this procedure, 4-aryl-2-mercaptothiazoles were obtained in yields of 40 to 80% with bis-(4-aryl-2-thiazolyl) sulfides as by-products (519). These latter products (194) have also been observed as a result of the action of thiourea on 2-chloro-4-arylthiazole under the same experimental conditions. They can be separated from 2-mercaptothiazoles because of their different degrees of solubility in sodium hydroxide solution at 5%. In this medium bis-(4-phenyl-2-thiazolyl)sulfide is... [Pg.276]

Adsorption systems employing molecular sieves are available for feed gases having low acid gas concentrations. Another option is based on the use of polymeric, semipermeable membranes which rely on the higher solubiHties and diffusion rates of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide in the polymeric material relative to methane for membrane selectivity and separation of the various constituents. Membrane units have been designed that are effective at small and medium flow rates for the bulk removal of carbon dioxide. [Pg.172]

ZeoHte-based materials are extremely versatile uses include detergent manufacture, ion-exchange resins (ie, water softeners), catalytic appHcations in the petroleum industry, separation processes (ie, molecular sieves), and as an adsorbent for water, carbon dioxide, mercaptans, and hydrogen sulfide. [Pg.137]

NKK s Bio-SR process is another iron-based redox process which instead of chelates, uses Thiobacillusferroidans )2iQ. - 2i to regenerate the solution (9). This process absorbs hydrogen sulfide from a gas stream into a ferric sulfate solution. The solution reacts with the hydrogen sulfide to produce elemental sulfur and ferrous sulfate. The sulfur is separated via mechanical means, such as filtering. The solution is regenerated to the active ferric form by the bacteria. [Pg.214]

Hydrochloric acid digestion takes place at elevated temperatures and produces a solution of the mixed chlorides of cesium, aluminum, and other alkah metals separated from the sUiceous residue by filtration. The impure cesium chloride can be purified as cesium chloride double salts such as cesium antimony chloride [14590-08-0] 4CsCl SbCl, cesium iodine chloride [15605 2-2], CS2CI2I, or cesium hexachlorocerate [19153 4-7] Cs2[CeClg] (26). Such salts are recrystaUized and the purified double salts decomposed to cesium chloride by hydrolysis, or precipitated with hydrogen sulfide. Alternatively, solvent extraction of cesium chloride direct from the hydrochloric acid leach Hquor can be used. [Pg.375]

Certain refinery wastewater streams are treated separately, prior to the wastewater treatment plant, to remove contaminants that would not easily be treated after mixing with other wastewater. One such waste stream is the sour water drained from distillation reflux drums. Sour water contains dissolved hydrogen sulfide and other organic sulfur compounds and ammonia which are stripped in a tower with gas or steam before being discharged to the wastewater treatment plant. [Pg.97]
