The carbonaceous particles, in turn, occur in one of two forms, graphitic and PAH clusters. PAH is an abbreviation for a family of organic compounds, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that consist of two or more benzene rings condensed on each other in a variety of ways. The diagrams on page 27 show the structures of some typical PAH molecules. [Pg.28]

It is well known that immunosuppression is caused by a variety of hydrocarbons such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons. Thus, human exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Japan (Yusho accident) and China has been associated with increased respiratory infections and decreased levels of immunoglobulins in serum. In animals exposed to these compounds there is atrophy of both primary and secondary lymphoid organs, lower circulating immunoglobulins and decreased antibody responses after exposure to antigens. The production of coke by the carbonization of bituminous coal leads to the release of chemically-complex emissions from coke ovens that include both gases and particulate matter of varying chemical composition. The emissions include coal tar pitch volatiles (e.g., particulate polycyclic organic matter [PPOM], polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs], and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons [PNAs]), aromatic compounds (e.g., benzene and p-naphthylamine), trace metals (e.g., arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, and nickel), and gases (e.g., nitric oxides and sulfur dioxide). [Pg.348]

Limited data is available on the concentration of volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from gasification processes. The data that is available indicate that VOCs, SVOCs, and PAHs are either non-detectable in flue gas streams from IGCC process or, in some cases where they were detected, they are at extremely low levels (on the order of parts per billion and lower). As above, the log k values of the different types of compounds [alkanols (ROH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), alkyl benzenes (RB), and alkyl benzoates (ROB)] each demonstrated a linear relationship with their log P values and this relationship was observed with different ratios of acetonitrile and water. The experiment was then performed in eluents containing different organic modifiers and it was found that the behaviour of analytes containing different functional groups differed and the effect depended on the log P of the analyte. [Pg.59]
