Dermal decontamination should be accomplished by repeated washing with soap. Exposed eyes should be irrigated with copious amounts of water for at least 15 min. Piperonyl butoxide may be mixed with hydrocarbons thus, emesis should be avoided. Activated charcoal can be administered following oral exposure. Treatment is symptomatic. No antidote is available. 

Inhalants Inhalants are volatile hydrocarbons and aerosols used to dispense chemicals that create a euphoric effect when inhaled. Euphoria can last a few minutes or several hours. Repeated used can lead to loss of consciousness and heart failure. There are no specific antidotes therefore, side effects are treated symptomatically. Long-term use damages the liver, kidney, central nervous system, brain, and bone marrow and induces hearing loss and peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling). Commonly used inhalants are ... 

Specifio drugs or antidotes may be available for systemic toxicity of some hydrocarbons (eg, acetylcysteine for carbon tetrachloride and methylene blue for methemoglobin formers) or their solutes (eg, chelation therapy for leaded gasoline and antidotes for pesticides, etc). 

This course covers hazardous materials including pesticides, corrosives, irritant gases, asphyxiants, hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents. Specific antidotes and their indications, contraindications, dosing and route are also included.
