Humidity enhanced

Various parameters have been identified that influence carbon corrosion, including humidity, with higher humidity enhancing corrosion [94], reactant partial pressure, fuel starvation, and also the carbon characteristics, including surface area and degree of graphitization [94]. As expected, both potential and variations in potential have also a strong influence on carbon corrosion [95]. [Pg.421]

As mentioned in Section IX-2A, binary systems are more complicated since the composition of the nuclei differ from that of the bulk. In the case of sulfuric acid and water vapor mixtures only some 10 ° molecules of sulfuric acid are needed for water oplet nucleation that may occur at less than 100% relative humidity [38]. A rather different effect is that of passivation of water nuclei by long-chain alcohols [66] (which would inhibit condensation note Section IV-6). A recent theoretical treatment by Bar-Ziv and Safran [67] of the effect of surface active monolayers, such as alcohols, on surface nucleation of ice shows the link between the inhibition of subcooling (enhanced nucleation) and the strength of the interaction between the monolayer and water. [Pg.338]

Air Drying Equipment. Tunnel kiln dryers (70) are long furnaces comprised of several zones of different temperature, humidity, and air flow through which the ware travels on a moving car or belt. These kilns afford continuous processing. Periodic kiln cross-circulation dryers (70) are box furnaces in which ware is stacked on permanent racks or on a car that can be shuttled in and out of the furnace. Fans or jets are used to circulate heat uniformly through the ware. The process is not continuous, but production rates can be enhanced by shuttling multiple cars. [Pg.310]

Here is an equation for relative humidity (RH) and a short BASIC computer program that enhances its value. The average difference between the equation and actual values runs only 0.33 percentage points and the highest absolute difference seen in comparisons w as 2 percentage points. [Pg.357]

Another family of feedbacks involving biota arise via the process of evapotranspiration in which the rate of water vapor is transferred from the land surface to the atmosphere is mediated by plants. Several consequences have been proposed that include influences of biota on the greenhouse effect of water vapor as well as relative humidity and clouds. Lovelock (1988) suggested that tropical forests might be kept cool by increasing cloud cover in response to higher relative humidity released through enhanced evapotranspiration (via the clouds influences on albedo). Yet another connection arises because tree-covered land has different turbulence properties above it than bare soil, which also influences the cloud cover above. [Pg.453]

Ripening seeds, except where they are enclosed in fleshy fruit, lose water until their water content is in equilibrium with atmospheric humidity and at this stage they contain 5-20% water. The water contents of some seeds can be reduced still further with no adverse effects on viability, rather this can enhance their survival in the dried state (Roberts, 1973). The longevity of seeds in this anhydrobiotic state can be prodigious, lasting for several hundred years (Priestley Posthumus, 1982). [Pg.117]
