All our natural resources must be used carefully to maximize their contributions, not only to sustain the current productivity of world agriculture, but to be able to augment its yields. Both our vast agricultural system and the broader ecosystem must receive greater protection than ever before from all pollutants including pesticides. Certainly this is possible to achieve, if humans work together for the good of society. 

In the age of raising industrial production the problem of environmental protection becomes a vital aspect in all questions of the human society. The problem involves questions of careful utilization of natural resources (raw materials and energy), the prevention of useless or harmful side-products, environmentally-tayloring of products, and the environmentally acceptable elimination (better recycling) of consumed products. Chemical industry in the widest meaning plays a major role in the solution of these questions. Also electrochemistry can contribute as its main scientific interest lays in the interaction of energy and chemical matter. Thus, in this paper one aspect among several others is mentioned which may play a role in the efforts to find new ways of the protection of the environment. 

One of the most important areas demanding careful life cycle (whole system) attention for biomass conversion to industrial products is the potential conflict with food and feed production. Biomass production for biobased industrial products seems to conflict with use of the same agricultural resources for human food and animal feed. This article briefly addresses this crucial point and finds considerable room for optimism.
