HPMC capsules are commonly made using low-viscosity grades of HPMC 2910 or 2906. HPMC and other materials are suspended in hot water, and subsequent decrease in water tanperature then allows the polymer to dissolve. Heated metal pins are then submerged into the concentrated solution. The heated pins cause local gelling of the polymer solution, leaving them coated with a thick film upon removal. Film coalescence occurs upon evaporation of water, and the resulting capsule half-shells are removed from the pins. Refer the book by Podczeck and Jones for more details on manufacturing of capsules. ... [Pg.521]

The capsule shells are, in essence, delivery vehicles designed to contain mainly powders or multiparticulates. Materials contained within the capsules may dissolve immediately but may also be coated to impart MR performance. In addition to the dietary advantages of HPMC capsules, they typically contain less residual moisture so, the materials contained within will be exposed to less moisture. ° Furthermore, the capsule is designed to quickly dissolve and thus release its materials within a matter of minutes. Gelatin cross-links if exposed to aldehydes, which hinders dissolution of the gelatin capsule. HPMC capsules are much less susceptible to cross-linking. [Pg.522]

HPMC has no reactive group like lysine in gelatin, HPMC capsules shell dose not react with spiramycin and its disintegration time is not changed. [Pg.60]

HPMC capsules filled with powder containing Vitamin C and 82 and stored under the condition of 40°C and 75%RH for 2 months. Figure 6 shows the dissolution profiles of vitamin 82. The dissolution rate of vitamin 82 in all the mediums were fast and did not change after the storage under severe condition. [Pg.60]

HPMC capsules and gelatin capsules containing cephalexin were administered to six human volunteers. Plasma levels of cephalexin were determined by HPLC and the obtained pharmacokinetic parameters are shown in Table 6. All the parameters, AUC, Cmax, and Tmax are not significantly different between HPMC and gelatin capsules, suggesting that both capsules have equivalent biopharmaceutical performance ... [Pg.61]

Physical properties of capsule shells made of HPMC and gelatin are summarized in Table 7. Several merits of HPMC capsules stand out low moisture content, low water vapor permeability, low static electricity, high ... [Pg.61]

The development of HPMC capsules is achieved by three specialized companies. The first is Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. which specialized in a field of polymer science. The second is Shionogi Co., Ltd., an innovative pharmaceutical company and the last is Shionogi Qualicaps Co., Ltd., ahard capsule manufacturer. In particular, I very much appreciate of Dr. N. Muranushi s (Shionogi Co., Ltd.) kindly supports. [Pg.62]
