In an old reinforced concrete building, AE measurement was carried out in advance of rebuilding the house. A plan view of the two-story building is given in Fig. 13.1. Since the structure was old and not in service, the audible noises were readily observed due to the traffic load. At five locations circled in the figure, continuous monitoring was conducted for a week. To analyze AE data, two waveform parameters of the RA value and the averaged frequency stated in Chapter 4 were applied.

But, Dona continued, despite careful interrogation, he persists in denying knowledge of the murder. He claims he did not even know about the viewing planned for this house and could not have told the Feathers about it. ... 

The best way not to experience a hazard is to avoid it. It would seem that a discriminating house builder would avoid building near specific hazards, critical habitats, or sediment sources. Often people take chances in order to gain a better view and be closer to the action. But if the disincentive is a lack of insurance coverage, they may be persuaded to follow a more cautious plan. 

In The Radiant City (La ville radieuse), published in 1933 and republished with few changes in 1964, Le Corbusier offers the most complete exposition of his views. Here as elsewhere, Le Corbusier s plans were self-consciously immodest. If E. E Schumacher made the case for the virtue of smallness, Le Corbusier asserted, in effect, "Big is beautiful. The best way to appreciate the sheer extravagance of his reach is to look briefly at three of his designs. The first is the core idea behind his Plan Voisin for central Paris (figure 14) the second, a new business city for Buenos Aires (figure 15) and the last, a vast housing scheme for about ninety thousand residents in Rio de Janeiro (figure 16). 

One person who did seriously consider this question was Alfred Jenkins, the China specialist on the White House staff beginning in late 1966. In one of his first reports to Rostow, Jenkins professed himself disappointed with the focus on issues of travel, trade, and Chinese representation in the UN. These struck him as potentially useful but peripheral measures in view of the uncertainties of the Cultural Revolution. He suggested that, for the moment, the administration should concentrate its planning resources on issues... to do with China in the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific and proceeded to list a remarkably farsighted set of strategic issues that few other officials had emphasized in connection with China policy ... 

To my regret, it was not possible for this book to include the earlier planned chapters on the progress of the basics of silicon chemistry, namely the methods of production of organosilicon monomers, particularly chloride-free and bioinspired methods of silicon polymers synthesis. I hope, however, that in view of the attention that the Springer publishing house pays to this branch of chemistry, those materials will appear in the journal Silicon if not in another collected volume.
