LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS OF RECYCLING AND RECOVERY OF HOUSEHOLDS PLASTICS WASTE PACKAGING MATERIALS. SUMMARY REPORT APME... [Pg.55]

Calibration was carried out for 0-100%wt PP content region. Two PCs fully described the model with a root square standard error of prediction (RMSEP) equal to 0.91%wt. Since the method is intended to be used for determination of very small amounts of PP in recycled HDPE, which has been carefully separated from PP and other household plastics, a PLS in a narrower interval, 0-15%wt PP, was designed. The model was validated by either cross validation or a test set consisting of three samples with 0.5, 7.0 and 12.0%wt PP content. The RMSEP was equal to 0.21%wt obtained from the calibration curves. [Pg.221]

In this study, Raman spectroscopy and pattern-recognition techniques were used to develop a potential method to differentiate common household plastics by type [87-89], which is crucial to ensure the economic viability of recycling. The test data consisted of 188 Raman spectra of six common household plastics high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinylchloride... [Pg.365]

Waste and litter is not the only concern of the public about plastics. There is enough truth in public criticisms of the performance of many household plastics products to concern the polymer industries. It is perhaps significant that rubber-based products such as motor car tyres,... [Pg.36]

This was especially true for household plastic packaging and resulted in a rather restrictive legal situation on collection and recycling of packaging materials. [Pg.531]

Currently the world s consumption of plastics is growing in this regard there are difficulties in disposing of large amounts of household plastic waste. The solution is to develop biodegradable polymers with a specific expiration date. This work is dedicated to the creation of biodegradable composite material based on LDPE, wood flour and rubbers of different nature. [Pg.127]

The permeabilization and subsequent incubation with transport mix are carried out in a humidified floating box. A household plastic box with a lid works well for this purpose. Insert paper towels on box bottom, soak with water, and place a layer of Parafilm on top. Preincubate the chamber in a water bath at 30°C. Spot drops of 40 fil of diluted SLO solution on top of the Parafilm and invert coverslips cell side down over SLO drops. [Pg.142]

You can use the essay "Polymers and Plastics" and Technique 25 with your spectrum to help determine the structure of the polymer. Most likely, the polymers will consist of plastic materials listed in Table Three of the essay. This table lists the recycling codes for a number of household plastics used in packaging. Submit the infrared spectrum along with the structure of the polymer to your instructor. Do your spectrum and structure agree with the recycling code Label the spectrum with the important absorption bands consistent with the structure of the polymer. [Pg.413]

The polymeric part of the household waste consists of more than 90 wt% of thermoplastics (mainly from plastics packaging) and less than 10% of thermosets. The composition of the household plastics waste and packaging plastics, respectively, from different countries is shown in Table 1. The data were gathered in a study ordered by the Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe (APME) [1] and in other investigations [2-7]. The results show that polyolefins (PE, PP) have the highest proportion in the municipal waste. The other polymeric components present in larger quantities are... [Pg.191]

In spite of many different applications of polymers in all fields of our life only 0.6 % of the whole waste amount are falling to plastics. All over, in Western Europe in 1993 2.8 billion refuse of all type was proved (household, agricultural waste, industrial waste, electrical/electronical scrap, building refuse etc.). From this amount the plastics waste is only 16.2 million t. In the waste stream the largest fraction is the household plastics waste, like shown in table 3 ... [Pg.453]

Another use of antimony in household plastic includes its use as a flame retardant in PVC covers of crib/cot mattresses (Jenkins et al. 1998a, b McCaUum 2005). While antimony has been detected in children s toys made of PVC, it is not clear if its use was as a pigment in the actual PVC or in paints used on the surface of toys (Kawamura et al. 2006). Antimony is also used in synthetic fabrics as a flame retardant, including use in protective clothing for firefighters (de Perio et al. 2010). [Pg.208]
