Parathyroid Hormone Parathyroid hormone raises plasma calcium by direct effects on bone resorption and renal reabsorption of calcium, and indirectly by regulating the metabolism of vitamin D. It is a peptide and acts via cell surface G-protein receptors linked to adenylate cyclase. The parathyroid glands have G-protein cell surface calcium receptors linked to phospholipase G, and parathyroid hormone is secreted in response to hypocalcemia. Magnesium is required for secretion of the hormone, which may explain the development of hypocalcemia in premature infants who are magnesium deficient. [Pg.88]

A vitamin-deficient diet can result in lowered levels of plasma calcium however, the use of high-calcium diets during vitamin deficiency can result in the maintenance of normal plasma calcium levels. The requirement for the vitamin may be overridden, providing that the diet contains high levels of calcium. The physiologically important form of vitamin D, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin Dj, is a hormone. Another hormone, parathyroid hormone (I TH), is used in the control of vitamin D metabolism and calcium levels, as detailed in the following sechon. [Pg.566]

Osteoblasts and kidney cells respond to PTH by possessing a single receptor known as the Parathyroid hormone/Parathyroid hormone-Related protein receptor (PPR). The PTH-mediated activation of the osteoblast PPR receptor reduces OCIF (osteoprotegerin)... [Pg.165]

Parathyroid Hormone Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an 84-amino-acid peptide, acts on membrane G protein-coupled receptors to increase cAMP in bone and the renal tubule. At high doses, the hormone increases blood calcium and decreases phosphorus by increasing net bone resorption (Figure 42-2). At low doses (physiologic levels), PTH can increase net bone formation (Table 42-1), and an analog has been used in postmenopausal osteoporosis. [Pg.369]

It is now clear that the vitamin D endocrine system is a major factor in the control of plasma calcium and the overall calcium economy of terrestial vertebrates The parathyroid glands monitor calcium concentration of the plasma (Fig. 5) and in response to low blood calcium secrete the parathyroid hormone Parathyroid hormone is taken up by the kidney and bone In the kidney, parathyroid hormone stimulates production of 1,25-(OH)2D3 The 1,25 (OH)2D3 then... [Pg.20]

The synthesis of a hormone at a site where it is not normally produced. Various tumours, particularly carcinoma of the bronchus, can result in the secretion of hormonal substances. Among the hormones which can be produced by tumours are antidiuretic hormone, parathyroid hormone, adrenocortico-trophic hormone, gastrin (in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) and erythropoietin. [Pg.125]
