Hormone replacement therapy HRT

Estrogens and progestins are diminished in menopausal or ovarectomized women. In hormone replacement therapy (HRT), these hormones are substituted to alleviate hot flushes, mood changes, sleep disorders, and osteoporosis. [Pg.599]

Many women seek medical treatment for the relief of menopausal symptoms, primarily hot flashes however, the role of hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) has changed dramatically over the years. HRT has long been prescribed for relief of menopausal symptoms and, until recent years, has been purported to protect women from CHD. The original reason behind recommending HRT in postmenopausal women revolved around a simple theory If the hormones lost during menopause were replaced through drug therapy, women would be protected from both menopausal symptoms and chronic diseases that often follow after a woman experiences menopause. Recent studies have disproved this theory. [Pg.766]

The statins have been demonstrated to markedly lower plasma LDL levels (and triglyceride levels to a lesser extent). In fact, statins were approved by the US FDA on the basis of a surrogate endpoint reduction in plasma cholesterol levels. Since we know that increased plasma cholesterol levels are correlated with increased risk of coronary artery disease, it seems logical that reducing plasma cholesterol levels would lead to reduced risk. That turns out to be true in this case. However, see the case of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women for a more complex example, discussed below. [Pg.269]

A 50-year-old female had a radical mastectomy three years ago for hormone-dependent breast adenocarcinoma. She is now complaining of shortness of breath, and chest X-ray shows diffuse lung metastases. As part of her therapeutic regimen, she is given intramuscular hormone replacement therapy (HRT). [Pg.242]

Options for treatment include hormone replacement therapy (HRT), bisphosphonates, calcitriol, calcitonin, raloxifene, strontium ranelate, and teriparatide. Hormone replacement therapy is generally indicated for women who are under 50 years and are experiencing a premature menopause. Symptomatic menopausal women may opt to use HRT also, as the benefits outweigh the risks for up to 5 years treatment. They may choose an alternative treatment for osteoporosis if preferred. Hormone replacement therapy is not recommended for first line treatment for long-term prevention of osteoporosis in women over 50 years of age. [Pg.272]

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), including tibolone, is not recommended for postmenopausal women over the age of 50 years unless other treatments for osteoporosis are contraindicated or not tolerated (MHRA, 2005). [Pg.438]
