This supplement seeks to build on the solid foundation established by Dr. G. B. Barlin s original volume, The Pyrazines, that appeared within this series in 1982. That original book presented the first comprehensive review of pyrazines, embracing a mass of important historical material as well as a modem systematic treatment of pyrazine chemistry. Not surprisingly, it stimulated a great deal of research in all aspects of the field, resulting in the need for a supplementary volume to cover literature published between 1979 and 2000, inclusive. [Pg.566]

The critical part of Boyle s book is based on a definition of the element as a simple body, or what remains after analysis. Indeed, this preliminary definition that serves as the measure against which he can deploy his scepticism has earned Boyle the honour of being considered the founder of modem chemistry in the eyes of several historians. Nevertheless, this historical claim is doubly unjust. First, because Boyle acknowledges that this definition of an element already exists among other chemists. Second, because he does not believe that any material body answers to this definition of an element. [Pg.137]

This review is an overview on the recent literature on 1,2,4-oxadiazole s chemistry and its major advances since the last reviews on this topic (2008MI243, 2009OBC4337). After a brief historical introduction and a general presentation of the main features of this heterocycle, modem synthetic methodologies will be presented together with recent mechanistic interpretations of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles thermal and photochemical reactivity. As for appHcations, the main fields of Hfe sciences and materials chemistry have been considered. A commentary on future prospects adds suggestions for further developments of 1,2,4-oxadiazole heterocycles. [Pg.86]

Coloured papers are especially complex in their retention chemistry. They need also to be of certain levels of opacity, so they include titanium dioxide as well. The colour formulations in modem decorative laminates tend now to be very complex. Historically one of the main sources of coloured pigmentation was from materials derived from heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and chromium. However, more environmentally acceptable alternatives were sought in the 1980s, and all the major decorative laminate paper producers are following the lead taken by a British papermaker, who had completely replaced these pigments with organic alternatives by about 1985. (See the entries on Dyes for the mass coloration of plastics, and Pigments for plastics, for further information on related issues.)... [Pg.481]

The object of this book is to present the basis of chemical kinetics in combination with its modem applications in chemistry, technology, and biochemistry. A brief historical note is given below. The material is traditionally divided into formal kinetics and kinetics in the gaseous phase. [Pg.559]
