High-speed train

Sintered Materials or Cermets. Heavy weights and high landing speeds of modem aircraft or high speed trains require friction materials that ate extremely stable thermally. Organic or semimetallic friction matenals ate frequendy unsatisfactory for these appHcations. Cermet friction materials ate metal-bonded ceramic compositions (see Composite materials) (12—14). The metal matrix may be copper or iron (15). [Pg.273]

Fire resistance is an important property of phenolic resins. The combination of phenolic resin with Expancel expandable microspheres leads to many useful products. Composites for high speed train interiors take advantage of the light weight, excellent fire rating, and very low thermal conductivity. Polyester filled with aluminum hydroxide is an alternative solution for train interior materials. The resin and filler can be easily processed when viscosity regulating additives are added. [Pg.625]

In the 1980s, a ceramic form of copper(I) oxide was found to have superconducting properties at temperatures higher than previously known superconductors. Superconductors have the ability to carry an electric current virtually without resistance. Once a current is initiated in a superconductor, it continues to travel through the material essentially forever. Superconductor research may lead to new technologies, from cheaper electrical power to magnetically levitated high-speed trains. [Pg.245]

The United States will soon have high-speed trains running between Boston and New York capable of speeds up to 160 mi7h. Will these trains be faster or slower than the fastest trains in the United Kingdom, which reach speeds of 225 km7h ... [Pg.166]

Over one-half of the QIC composites in the world are used in aircraft brake systems (Figure 6). The use of C/C braking in racecars is cost effective, but in other land vehicles such as high speed trains it is not [54]. [Pg.324]
