Heymann et al. [255] and Smith et al. [256] reported the synthesis of C70O 82 by photooxygenation. Irradiation of an oxygenated toluene solution of C70 and rubrene as a sensitizer resulted in the formation of a nearly 1 1 mixture of two C70O isomers 82a and 82b that can not be separated (Fig. 31). The structures of 82a and 82b were elucidated by UV-vis spectroscopy, 13C-NMR studies as well as 3He NMR studies. No evidence for the formation of isomers 82c and 82d was found.

Okubo et al. (1990) studied the immunosuppressive effects of FK506 on active Heymann s nephritis and the autologous phase of Masugi nephritis. 

The addition of excess calcium acetate to purified cellulosic material suspended in water, followed by titration of the liberated acetic acid, was suggested by L(idtke. From the 0.1% carboxyl content obtained, a D.P. value of 277 was calculated for the cellulosic material employed. This method has been studied further and comparative data with the earlier conductometric titration procedure have been presented by Heymann and Rabinov, by Kenyon and coworkers, and by Sookne and Harris. The latter workers report that electrodialyzed depectin-ized cotton has a carboxyl content of 0.045% or a D.P, of 616. An iodometric titration procedure for estimating carboxyl groups in cellulosic materials has also been described by Ltidtke. The procedure involves a thiosulfate titration of the iodine liberated from a mixture of potassium iodate and potassium iodide by the carboxyl groups of the cellulosic material. The carboxyl content determined by this method agreed well with that obtained by the calcium acetate method.

Models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were object to l,25(OH)2D3 treatment, providing additional support for the high potential of the hormone for the treatment of Thl-mediated diseases. As an example, in rat adjuvant arthritis l,25(OH)2D3 improved the inhibiting effect of cyclosporine A on arthritis onset as well as on arthritis aggravation [142]. The incidence and severity of type II collagen-induced arthritis was reduced in rats or mice orally treated with 25-(OH)2-D3, the 1,25 (OH)2D3 analog MC 1288 or l,25(OH)2D3 [143-145], l,25(OH)2D3 has further proven to be therapeutically effective in animal models of autoimmune thyroiditis [146], allogeneic transplantation [66, 147,148], rat Heymann nephritis [149] and autoimmune prostatitis [80]. Results from l,25(OH)2D3-related studies in animal models are summarized in Table 10.3.

Materials implanted into bone are modified by degradation and the action of different cell types. Degradation occurs by dissolution and the action of osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are very effective in material removal and provide a material resorption mechanism at the surface of the ceramic and particulate removal by phagacytosis (Heymann et al. 2001). Degradation of calcium phosphates as obtained from in vitro studies employing cells or animal studies has been discussed in several reviews (Frayssinet et al. 1993, Le Geros 1993, Heymann et al. 1999). 

In a study (Heymann et al, 1964) involving the structure of deacetylated C-poly-saccharide of Group A hemolytic streptococci, infrared spectroscopy has been used to observe the disappearance of amide absorption as a result of treatment at 100°C with 0.49N barium hydroxide.
