Hexadecylpyridinium salts

MAS has been applied to a highly viscous cubic phase of a lyotropic LC formed by 1-monooleolyl-rac-glycerol and water in order to obtain liquid-like and 13C spectra.330 Deuterium, sodium, and fluorine NMR spectroscopy have been applied to study the phase behaviour of several dilute lamellar systems formed by low concentrations of an ra-hexadecylpyridinium salt, a sodium salt (e.g., NaBr, NaCl, or sodium trifluoroacetate), 1-hexanol, and D20.331 The 2H, 19F, and 23Na splittings were used to monitor the phase equilibria. The last two studies are motivated by the search of new lyotropic LC for the alignment of biomolecules. 

Because of the possibility of charge-transfer interactions between polar head and halide ion, ion specific interactions can be expected to be particularly marked for alkylpyridinium halides. From the CMCs counterion dependence3, as well as from counterion dissociation studies, binding is found to follow the sequence I- > Br > CP. The size of hexadecylpyridinium micelles is very sensitive to the anion of added salt, aggregation being promoted according to the sequence227 F [Pg.52]

The thermodynamics of the partition of complexes of chondroitin sulphate and hexadecylpyridinium complexes in butan-l-ol-aqueous salt biphasic solutions have been reported. 

There are a variety of cationic surfactants other than quaternary alkylammonium salts. Accordingly, complex formation of 1-hexadecylpyridinium bromide (CPB) was attempted (Figure 4.44). After many trials, ten complex crystals were obtained, two of which were suitable for X-ray analysis, i.e. with guaiacol (XXXIII) and 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (XXXTV) (Figure 4.44). The two crystals are isostructural.
