Heuristic approaches

The practical and computational complications encountered in obtaining solutions for the described differential or integral viscoelastic equations sometimes justifies using a heuristic approach based on an equation proposed by Criminale, Ericksen and Filbey (1958) to model polymer flows. Similar to the generalized Newtonian approach, under steady-state viscometric flow conditions components of the extra stress in the (CEF) model are given a.s explicit relationships in terms of the components of the rate of deformation tensor. However, in the (CEF) model stress components are corrected to take into account the influence of normal stresses in non-Newtonian flow behaviour. For example, in a two-dimensional planar coordinate system the components of extra stress in the (CEF) model are written as... [Pg.14]

Heuristic. The heuristic approach is another early synthesis technique based on the appHcation of sets of rules to lead to a specific objective such as network cost. Unfortunately, heuristics caimot guarantee that the objective will be reached although they generally offer quick solutions. [Pg.523]

Cropley, J. B. Heuristic Approach to Complex Kinetics, pp. 292-302 in Chemical Reaction Engineering—Houston, ACS Symposium Series 65, American Chemical Society, Washington, DC (1978). [Pg.422]

Some authors have not only given advice but have created methods to execute experiments to generate kinetic models. The Heuristic Approach to Complex Kinetics of Cropley (1978) which is well tested, is one that will be described next. Then, other recommendations will be discussed briefly. [Pg.140]

Stroboscopic Method.—This method was developed a few years ago by the writer in collaboration with M. Schiffer, and is based on the transformation theory of differential equations.20 We shall give here only the heuristic approach to this method, referring for its analytical proof to other published material.21... [Pg.363]

CPU time. In response to these slow and rigorous calculations, many fast heuristic approaches have been developed that are based on intuitive concepts such as docking [10], matching pharmacophores [19], or linear free energy relationships [20], A disadvantage of many simple heuristic approaches is their susceptibility to generalization error [17], where accuracy of the predictions is limited to the training data. [Pg.326]

In dealing with the SGS terms, Revstedt et al. (1998, 2000) and Revstedt and Fuchs (2002) did not use any model rather, they assumed these terms were just as small as the truncation errors in the numerical computations. This heuristic approach lacks physics and does not deserve copying. A most welcome aspect of LES is that the SGS stresses may be conceived as being isotropic, i.e., insensitive to effects of the larger scales, to the way the turbulence is induced and to the complex and varying boundary conditions of the flow domain. Exactly this... [Pg.161]

The hybrid approach tries to combine the model-based optimization approach with the heuristic approach, thereby, avoiding the problems of unavailability of models. In the initial stages, a property-based approach (where properties are obtained through model or experimental measurements) is applied and in the final stages (where models are usually easy to develop), a model-based optimization approach is applied (see for example, Gani (2004)). More work is needed to establish this technique for food-process applications. [Pg.170]

This result differs from Schelkin s heuristic approach only by the factor of 2 in the second term. The Clavin-Williams expression is essentially restricted to the case of (U /SL) [Pg.233]

Related studies to the diagnosis of bioprocess have been limited and have used mainly heuristic approaches. Moreover, they have been concerned with the detection of a disfunction of the bioprocess (detection of a desestabiliza-tion, state of the biomass, etc.) rather than the detection and the location of sensor and/or actuators faults. The interested reader will be able to refer to the following references [4], [5], [12], [14], [27], [28], [43], [45], [47], [52], [59], [60], [61], [63], [64], [71]. [Pg.132]

The implication of these problems is daunting and has led researchers to overlook some of the nasty details and to develop what might be called practical strategies . This situation is just another example of the heuristic nature of many of the computational methods employed in biological research in general and drug research in particular. What is described in this chapter is a practical procedure based on a soft, heuristic approach to the problem of compound acquisition that has been implemented and used at Pharmacia over the last several years. [Pg.318]

As the nature of chemistry space depends upon the way in which compounds are represented, an absolute or universal chemistry space does not exist. Thus, any procedure that utilizes chemistry space may be subject to considerable uncertainty, and the results obtained in different chemistry spaces are likely to differ, sometimes in quite significant ways. This rather daunting circumstance has necessitated the use of practical, heuristic approaches that, while imperfect, have nevertheless performed in a reasonably satisfactory manner over the last three years. During this period about 120000 diverse, quality compounds have been added to our corporate compound collection. This does not include the many compounds obtained from combinatorially derived libraries and special target-directed (e.g., kinase) libraries. [Pg.329]

Motoc et al.30) presented recently a Monte Carlo method designed to perform the sector partition of the molecular van der Waals envelope. Suggesting an heuristic approach for determining the proper intersection point of the three orthogonal planes defining the octants, this method may be regarded as a generalization of the character variables of Testa and Purcell. [Pg.102]

Achieving a complete solution of the set of equations above is difficult, as pointed out earlier. In addition to the numerical solution (33), Pearson (35) proposed a heuristic approach. Insight into the nature of melting with drag-forced removal can be obtained, however, by considering some special cases that lead to analytical, closed-form solutions. These simplified cases per se represent very useful solutions to the modeling of processing methods. [Pg.208]

This materials-specific term is proportional to the inverse of the thermodynamic factor and measures the increase of particle number density with chemical potential (while the electrical capacitance measures the increase of charge with electrical potential). For short times at which the profile near one electrode does not yet perceive the influence of the second one, the result is a 4t -law, and obviously differs from the heuristic approach. Thus more correctly one has to replace Cs by a Warburg-type capacitance as already discussed above (for a more exact description cf. Part I2, Section VI.7). Other figures from the classical period include H. E. Armstrong, chiefly remembered for his heuristic approach to chemical education, his dyspeptic criticism of other chemists, notably those of the Ingold/Robinson schools, and for his own research on naphthalene derivatives. He is commemorated in a recent short article 45 A chemist who has attracted more interest for his other activities than for his science is the musician Aleksandr Borodin. Several articles in 1987 marked the centenary of his death,46 8 and a longer one examined his chemistry in greater detail, notably his work on aldehydes, and the opposition encountered from Kekule49 An English... [Pg.60]
