Heptyl paraben

Parabens are alkyl esters of p-hydroxyben-zoic acid. The alkyl groups may be one of the following methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or heptyl. Parabens are colorless, tasteless, and odorless (except the methyl paraben). They are nonvolatile and nonhygroscopic. Their solubility in water depends on the nature of the alkyl group the longer the alkyl chain length, the lower the solubility. They differ from benzoic acid in that they have antimicrobial activity in both acid and alkaline pH regions. [Pg.325]

The parabens also show increased binding affinity with increased chain length. Thus, 2-ethylhexyl, heptyl, and benzyl 4-hydroxybenzoates showed greater affinity for the ER than those with shorter side chains (butyl, propyl, ethyl, and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoates). [Pg.506]

The parabens (QH4(OH)C02R where R=CH3, C2H5, C3H7 or CtH.s) are effective to higher pH and may be used in relatively neutral products. The heptyl ester is used in beer, while the others are used in a similar range of products as benzoic acid. [Pg.125]

The parabens , esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, especially the methyl, ethyl, propyl, and heptyl esters, are much used as food preservatives. Their high p/C (8.5) ensures their non-ionized character in neutral foods. [Pg.375]
