Hemlock oils

Spruce and hemlock oils are produced in Canada and the Northeast of the United States by steam distillation of needles and twigs from Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. (black spruce), Picea glauca (Moench) Voss (white spruce), Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. (Hemlock spruce), and related species. They are very pale to light yellow liquids with a pleasant odor reminiscent of pine needles.

Hemlock Liniment. Oil of hemlock, 4 ounce cjunpbor, in gum, i ounce opium, 4 ounce spirits of wine, 1 pint. Mix. It is a flrst-rate rubefacient in inflammatory rheumatism, gout, quinsy, inflamed breast, white swellings, Sc,... 

Barren s Indian Lirtiment. Alcohol, 1 quart tincture of capsicum, 1 ounce oils of onganuni. sassafras, jjennyroyal, hemlock, of each 4 ounce, and mix. 

Allen s Nerve and Bone Liniment. Take oil of origanum, oil of rosemary, oil of amber, oil or hemlock, of each 4 ounces spirits of tuipentine, 2 lons linseed oil, 3 gallons. Mix, and color with anchusa root. 

James Oil of Oladneas. Take oil of hemlock, 1 ounce linseed oil, 1 quart. 

Comum Fruit, Hemlock poison hemlock spotted hemlock poison parsley spotted cowbane, Full-grown, but unripe, carefully dried fruit of Conium maculatum L., Um-belUferae. Habit. Europe, Asia, naturalized in U.S. Constit. 0.5 15% coniine, conhydrine, pseudoconhydrine, methyl-coniine, ethylpi peri dine, comic acid, volatile and fixed oil. Has antispasmodic activity. 

C20H20O6, Mr 356.38, mp. 254-255°C, [alg -54.5 (acetone). C. is a lignan occurring in pine resin, hemlock fir resin, and other Tsuga species as well as in Trachelospermum asiaticum, Picea species, and in Abies amabilis. It can be isolated from the waste water of pine cellulose production. Demethylation furnishes conidendrols. C. is used as an antioxidant in cotton oil and peanut oil, etc.
