Palpitations, pounding heart, or rapid heart rate... 

Indications Vacuity taxation, vacuity vexation, inability to sleep. Insomnia, nervous exhaustion, night sweats, poor memory, nightmares, rapid heart palpitations, crying and irritability in teething infants, neurasthenia, and schizophrenia... 

Main signs symptoms Heart palpitations, night sweats, dizziness and vertigo,dry throat and mouth, a red tongue, and a thready, rapid pulse... 

Because they increase the force of the heartbeat, all three catecholamines may produce an excessively rapid heart rate. Palpitations produced by epinephrine and isoproterenol are accompanied by tachycardia, whereas those produced by norepinephrine usually are accompanied by bradycardia owing to reflex slowing of the heart. Headache and tremor are also common. Epinephrine is especially likely to produce anxiety, fear, and nervousness. 

Palpitations with a deep red tongue and a wiry and rapid pulse add Dan Shen (Salviae miltiorrhizae radix) to cool the Heart blood and calm the mind. 

This formula is devised for treating Heart-Yin and Kidney-Yin deficiency with empty-heat in these organs. The disorder is manifested as anxiousness, irritability, palpitations, difficulty in falling asleep, forgetfulness, nocturnal emissions and tiredness. The dryness due to Yin deficiency and fire consumption causes constipation, a dry mouth and ulcers on the tongue. The red tongue without coating and the rapid, restless and thready pulse indicate Yin deficiency with empty-heat. 

Heat may push the blood and disturb the functions of the Heart and Liver. Patients may present with irritability, thirst, insomnia and palpitations, a red tongue and a rapid and thready pulse. 

Zhen Zhu is sweet, salty and cold. Its function of sedating the Heart-shen is more moderate than that of Ci Shi. Its principal focus is on disorders of the Heart as it enters the Heart and Liver meridians directly. As well as sedating the Heart-shen, its sweet nature can ease the tension of conflict, calm the mind and slow down the pathological process of anxiety. It is also effective in clearing fire of the Heart and Liver, and treats restlessness, palpitations, irritability and difficulty falling asleep. In this condition, patients may have a rapid, active and restless pulse, particularly in the first position on the left side. 

This formula can nourish the Yin of the Heart and calm the mind. It is used for treating restlessness and insomnia due to Heart-Yin and Kidney-Yin deficiency and empty-fire. Besides restlessness and insomnia, symptoms such as palpitations, forgetfulness, mental tiredness, constipation and ulcers in the mouth occur. A red tongue without coating and a thready, rapid pulse are also present. 

This formula can tonify the Qi of the Heart and Kidney, and promote a better connection of these two organs so as to calm the mind. It is used for treating a chronic condition of palpitations, restlessness, dizziness, mental confusion and tiredness due to Qi deficiency of the Heart and Kidney and obstruction of the Heart meridian. A rapid, rootless pulse is often palpable and a pale tongue is often observed.

Potential harmful side effects associated with ephedra include nervousness, irritability, headaches, insomnia, palpitations, depression, and paranoia. Other possible side effects are hypertension and rapid heartbeat. Ephedra users also face an increased risk of seizures, heart attack, and stroke. A heart attack or stroke caused by ephedra can result in death.

Most often patients complain of rapid beat rate/palpitations and/or worsening symptoms of heart failure (shortness of breath, fatigue). Medical emergencies are severe heart failure (i.e., pulmonary edema, hypotension) or atrial fibrillation occurring in the setting of acute Ml. 

Patients frequently complain of intermittent episodes of rapid heart rate/palpitations that start and stop abruptly, usually without provocation (but occasionally during exercise). Severe symptoms include syncope. Often (in particular, those with AV nodal reentry) patients complain of a chest pressure or a fullness in the neck sensation. This is due to simultaneous AV contraction with the right atrium contracting against a closed tricuspid valve. Life-threatening symptoms (syncope, hemodynamic collapse) are associated with extremely rapid rate (e.g., >200 beats per minute) and atrial fibrillation associated with an accessory AV pathway.

Information for Patients The action of albuterol tablets may last up to 8 hours or longer. Albuterol tablets should not be taken more frequently than recommended. Do not increase the dose or frequency of albuterol tablets without consulting your physician. If you find that treatment with albuterol tablets becomes less effective for symptomatic relief, your symptoms get worse, and/or you need to take the product more frequently than usual, you should seek medical attention immediately. While you are taking albuterol tablets, other asthma medications and inhaled drugs should be taken only as directed by your physician. Common adverse effects include palpitations, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and tremor or nervousness. If you are pregnant or nursing, contact your physician about use of albuterol tablets. Effective and safe use of albuterol tablets includes an understanding of the way that it should be administered. 

Abrupt withdrawal of oral clonidine therapy nay result in a rapid increase of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with associated synptons as nervousness, agitation, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, headache, sweating, palpitation increased heart rate, tremor, hiccups, stonach pains, nausea, muscle pains, and increased salivation (1). 

Even beer will cause a flushing of the face and hands, with rapid pulse, and some of the men describe palpitations and a terrible fullness of the face, eyes and head. After a glass of beer the blood pressure falls about 10 points, the pulse is slightly accelerated and the skin becomes flushed in the face and wrists. In 15 minutes the blood pressure falls another 10 points, the heart is more rapid, and the patient complains of fullness in the head. ... 

The patient feels some of the arrhythmias as palpitations. Palpitations are felt as "skipped beats," thumping or pounding in the chest, rapid heart rate, or irregular beating of the heart. This is uncomfortable and frightening for the patient. Palpitations may be symptomatic of serious cardiac problems or the result of anxiety and benign with no cardiac dysfunction. MI establishes the potential for either type of palpitation. 

Wet Beriberi. The presence of edema distinguishes this form from dry beriberi. Other features are extreme loss of appetite, breathlessness, and disorders of the heart which range from palpitation and rapid heart rate to dilation of the heart muscle (myocardium) and congestive heart failure. When the cardiac disorders are severe, the disease may be called cardiac beriberi, or Shoshin beriberi (a name us in Asia).
