An ever-increasing number of healthcare agents is being offered to us by a wide range of retail outlets in addition to the pharmacist. We are under the pressure of commercial companies to buy such products and some of them may be using only partial data concerning their beneficial aspects in order to boost profits. 

Few substances have had a greater positive impact upon human healthcare management than antibodies, vaccines and adjuvants. For most of this century, these immunological agents have enjoyed widespread medical application, predominantly for the treatment/prevention of infectious diseases. As a group, they are often referred to as biologies (Chapter 1). 

Isolation Procedures Once a victim of chemical or biological agents or weapons gets to the hospital or another healthcare facility, that person may have to abide by patient isolation procedures. These include Standard Precautions, Airborne Precautions, Droplet Precautions, and Contact Precautions. These precautions are spelled out in the third edition of Medical Management Of Biological Casualties Handbook published by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease located at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. 

Medical devices and pharmaceuticals are two closely related communities. Their materials of concern are agents intended as therapeutics or as components of devices to be used in healthcare, where the production worker or healthcare provider (doctor, nurse, or pharmacist) may have a significant chance of exposure, but the major concern is for those patients who receive or use the drug or device. Various centers of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are the primary U.S. regulators.

We have experience in using two different ultrasound contrast agents [Optison (GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI, USA) and Definity (Bristol-Myers Squibb Medical Imaging, N. Billerica, MA, USA)] that produce almost identical results (18). Both are stored at +4°C. It is likely that similar results could be obtained with other ultrasound contrast agents containing microbubbles.
