Head, Anthony

Yes, I say, gazing up at the tower. Here, if anywhere, Anthony should be the echo of the slam of a door, the clank and stench of a bucket, a wisp of candle smoke, the shadow of a bent head cast on a stone wall as he writes. [Pg.353]

I especially thank Dr. Joseph Thrasher, former Head of the Chemistry Department, and Dr. Anthony J. Arduengo ni., Saxon Professor of Chemistry, who worked together to appoint me to teach Spectroscopic Methods in Organic Chemistry , the course that gave birth to this book. [Pg.137]

Fig. 5). After her death, Antonio sets a gigantic spin machine in operation to take advantage of her death and engineer his own ruthless ascent to power. The political edge is sharpened by the casting Antonio is played by Anthony Booth, the father-in-law of Prime Minister Tony Blair. As Vindice and Ffippolyto are shot by Antonio s police force, the camera pans up the staircase on which they have been standing to reveal a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II hanging above Antonio s head and legitimising his regime. Although a variety of metallic biomaterials have been employed in joint arthroplasty, alloys of cobalt, 28% chromium, and 6% molybdenum (CoCr) are viewed as the gold standard for use in MOM bearings. CoCr alloy is also considered the gold standard as a femoral head material for articulations against conventional as well as highly crosslinked UHMWPE (Muratoglu and Kurtz 2002, Sauer and Anthony 1998). CoCr alloys (e.g., Vitallium ) have been used for hip replacements since 1938, when the biomaterial was employed in the Smith-Petersen mold arthroplasty (Smith-Petersen 1948). [Pg.94]

In the late 1970s, Minoxidil, patented by Upjohn, was used to control high blood pressure. In 1980, Dr. Anthony Zappacosta mentioned in a letter published in TTie New England Journal of Medicine that one of his patients using Minoxidil for high blood pressure was starting to grow hair on his nearly bald head. [Pg.320]

The early attempts in this area revealed that the nonionic polymer and cationic surfactants do not interact with each other. However, in the presence of some types of ions (such as SCN or U) as counterions, a weak interaction was observed. The bulkiness of the cationic surfactant head group (compared to anionic surfactants) was the main reason for such observations (Nagarajan 1989 Witte and Engberts 1987). However, recent studies have shown that many nonionic polymers can interact and associate with cationic surfactants. Hydrophobicity has been mentioned as one of the key factors and plays an important role in the interaction between nonionic polymers and cationic surfactant. Typically, polymers with higher hydrophobicity show a better interaction (Anthony and Zana 1996 Thuresson et al. 1995,1996). Zana et al. (1992) reported that when hydroxyethyl cellulose interacts with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride and bromide, the CAC is less than CMC and the aggregation number of the surfactant is also less compared with the polymer-free solution. Brackman et al. (1992) observed no interaction between the nonionic polymers PEO and PVP polymers and the cationic surfactant. [Pg.670]

By the late 1850s, St. Paul had established itself as the head of navigation on the Mississippi River, with over 1,000 steamboat dockings a year, bringing a flood of goods and settlers. The rapids below St. Anthony Falls, however, had isolated Minneapolis, and navigation boosters there had started discussing a lock and dam... [Pg.1290]

Since Bakelite was the first commercial, fully synthetic polymer [136-143]. Baekeland is a particular important pioneer in the history of polycondensation, and thus, a short biography should be presented at this point. Baekeland was bom on November 1863 in Ghent, Belgium. Supported by a fellowship of his hometown, he studied chemistry at the university of Ghent and received the Ph.D. in 1884 with maxima cum laude in the age of 21 . He was appointed as associate professor of chemistry in 1989. He married Celine Swarts, the daughter of the head of the department and spent the honeymoon in New York. There he met R. Anthony of the E. and H. T. Anthony photographic company, who offered him a job. Baekeland emigrated to the U.S.A. and became a naturalized American in 1897. [Pg.23]
