In some cases, direct measurements of contaminant exposure may be made, such as in the assessment of the steady-state release of an established hazardous waste source. Groundwater monitoring wells or air-sampling devices can be used to determine current exposure concentrations for exposed populations. Commonly, however, air, surface water, and groundwater sampling is neither a logical nor a practical choice. Typical situations in which sampling is not feasible include (i) the evaluation of future exposme and risk to potentially exposed populations and (ii) the potential risk from an event that has yet to occm (e.g. a hazardous waste spill). [Pg.4549]

A further part of the assessment phase is to generate options for dealing with generated wastes. Use the list above (or the suggested answers) and discuss the various options available for minimizing major hazardous waste sources on a small college campus. [Pg.735]

Contaminated soil is a particular concern with respect to exposure of children to hazardous substances. The most common such contaminant is lead, especially in areas around lead smelters. Soil contaminants from hazardous waste sources also include arsenic, carcinogenic benzo(a)pyrene, and PCBs. ... [Pg.405]

Hazardous-waste chemicals can enter the atmosphere by evaporation from hazardous-waste sites, by wind erosion, or by direct release. Hazardous-waste chemicals usually are not evolved in large enough quantities to produce secondary air pollutants. (Secondary air pollutants are formed by chemical processes in the atmosphere. Examples are sulfuric acid formed from emissions of sulfur oxides and oxidizing photochemical smog formed under sunny conditions from nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons.) Therefore, species from hazardous-waste sources are usually of most concern in the atmosphere as primary pollutants emitted in localized areas at a... [Pg.668]
