Partially Plastic Thick-Walled Cylinders. As the internal pressure is increased above the yield pressure, P, plastic deformation penetrates the wad of the cylinder so that the inner layers are stressed plasticady while the outer ones remain elastic. A rigorous analysis of the stresses and strains in a partiady plastic thick-waded cylinder made of a material which work hardens is very compHcated. However, if it is assumed that the material yields at a constant value of the yield shear stress (Fig. 4a), that the elastic—plastic boundary is cylindrical and concentric with the bore of the cylinder (Fig. 4b), and that the axial stress is the mean of the tangential and radial stresses, then it may be shown (10) that the internal pressure, needed to take the boundary to any radius r such that is given by... 

Bai [48] presents a linear stability analysis of plastic shear deformation. This involves the relationship between competing effects of work hardening, thermal softening, and thermal conduction. If the flow stress is given by Tq, and work hardening and thermal softening in the initial state are represented... 

The analysis of work-hardening is difficult. Its contribution/, , to the total dislocation resistance / is considerable and increases with strain (Fig. 10.3). 

Sb and Ba are present in the airborne gunshot residue expelled from all of the brands of 0.22 cal ammo. A chemical analysis of the primer. of the Western brand gave a Ba to Sb ratio of 65, whereas the same ratio obtained from the data in Table 11 is 2.6. The authors conjecture that this additional Sb left in the air came from the vaporized bullet Pb which contains a large amt of Sb as a hardening agent...

This book should convince even the most hardened of the doubting Thomases that polymer/additive analysis has gone a long way. With a developing field such as this one, any report represents only work in progress and is not the last word. 

This analysis is consistent with the conclusion of Gerk (1977) that the behavior that determines hardness is deformation-hardening not the yield stress. He was one of the first authors to point this out. For other types of materials, it is the maximum stress that the material can bear after deformation (plastic, or that associated with phase transitions in eluding twinning). Hardness is not directly related to the elastic limit, although there is an indirect connection with the offset plastic deformation of metals as demonstrated by Tabor (1951).

It did not deviate from the values found with pure cultures (Freudenreich and Orla-Jensen 1906 van Niel 1928). The analytical methods allowed the determination of the products of glucose fermentation by Escherichia coli, and the general equation calculated (Harden 1901) does not differ from that accepted today. Harden even correctly deduced that hydrogen arises from formic acid the Aerobacter modihcation was recognized by Harden in 1906. Thus the methods for the analysis of fermentation products were completed within the nineteenth century. 

PP bead foams were subjected to oblique impacts, in which the material was compressed and sheared. This strain combination could occur when a cycle helmet hit a road surface. The results were compared with simple shear tests at low strain rates and to uniaxial compressive tests at impact strain rates. The observed shear hardening was greatest when there was no imposed density increase and practically zero when the angle of impact was less than 15 degrees. The shear hardening appeared to be a unique function of the main tensile extension ratio and was a polymer contribution, whereas the volumetric hardening was due to the isothermal compression of the cell gas. Foam material models for finite element analysis needed to be reformulated to consider the physics of the hardening mechanisms, so their predictions were reliable for foam impacts in which shear occurred. 16 refs. 

Often iron stones have an oolithic texture, i.e. they consist of perfectly rounded bodies, the so-called ooids. Iron oxide ooids are mm to cm in size, hardened and showing concentric Fe accumulations (Plate 15.1), which suggest cyclic precipitation of the Fe oxide. Ghemical point analysis by the electron microprobe indicates enrichment of Ti, P and V in the Fe oxides, whereas Si and Al concentrations are very low (Fig. 15.5). The mode of Fe ooid formation and in particular the need for some mechanical action to produce the perfect rounding has been a matter for discussion for a long time. A variety of infrared methods have been available for the simple problems of verifying the purity of the initial resin components and mixtures of those components. The simplest possible test of the purity of a reactant is to compare its spectrum with a known standard. Subtractive methods may be employed to emphasize the most significant intensity changes 19). Composition analysis of the blended resins and hardeners becomes more difficult. In some cases, one may simply select characteristic isolated absorption bands for each component and estimate the composition by comparison to standard spectra of known composition 20,21).
