Mayer had married in 1842, and for the first few years his marriage was a vei y happy one, but then his life began to fall apart. Between May 1845 and August 1848 three of his children died. A nasty priority controversy with Joule became public when their claims were read and discussed by the Academy of Science in Paris. Mayer was upset that his writings on energy conservation were not more widely read, and that they often were not appreciated by the few scientists who did read them. And, as the final blow, he was accused by local scientists of being more a mad philosopher than a competent scientist. [Pg.784]

The authors are happy to acknowledge the help and support of those people and institutions who assisted in fulfilling the task of writing this book. The present English edition includes numerous original results obtained by the authors in cooperation with their graduate students and coworkers after publication of the Russian version of the book in 1982. We appreciate very much their collaboration and the important role of the seminar of the Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory in the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion of the Russian Academy, where most of them work. [Pg.10]

Never mind the publicity. We were happy to have found the handle of the spigof that turns on the effects of BZ and other incapacitating agents, and then learned how to turn it back the other way, shutting down the delirium that BZ and other belladonnoids can so readily produce. [Pg.116]

I would be happy to provide photos of my car, but only if my well-being and safety is protected. People here know my name, so my address is public info. There are people who are waiting for me to make the mistake they need to start their dirty deeds towards me and my family. [Pg.11]

The physicians on the university faculty were not happy to see Paracelsus made a professor without their consent. So they insisted that a colloquy, a public test of the new professor s qualifications, be held. Under ordinary circumstances, a colloquy was only a formality but not this time, as Paracelsus realized when he discovered that Dr. Hock had come from Strasbourg to debate him. In the end, Paracelsus simply did not show up for the colloquy. He and his allies on the town council contended that because the council had created the position, the appointment did not have to be validated by the university. The university countered that because it had not been allowed to confirm Paracelsus s appointment, it did not have to extend any academic privileges to him. [Pg.34]

Finally, we are happy to print the recent IUPAC Recommendations on Symbols and Terminology in Heterogeneous Catalysis, prepared for publication by Robert L. Burwell, Jr. Everybody writing papers in this area will want to consult this document, the first major move toward uniformity of presentation in our field. [Pg.438]

Extensive media coverage in the 1990s made the public aware of Prozac and greatly increased the demand for the drug. Some people got the impression that it had no side effects, helped in weight loss, and was a sort of happy pill that everyone should take. But neither this nor the other SSRI drugs improve mood or make healthy people high or happier if they are not clinically (observed symptoms) depressed. [Pg.53]

Their discovery was published in 1954, and the groundbreaking article has been considered so important that the journal Acta Psediatrica reproduced the first page of the original paper in an issue of 2001 on the 47th anniversary of the original publication.99 The three researchers received the John Scott Medal for contributions to the comfort, welfare and happiness of mankind from the City Trust, Philadelphia, in 1962 for their work on... [Pg.198]

Priestley, if not Watt, was happy to implicate Watt s contribution to the Considerations, publicly as well as privately, in a rearguard defence of phlogiston theory. [Pg.122]

To help further involve the public in atomic energy issues, Einstein and a small group of other leading researchers formed the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists to raise money for public information campaigns. Pauling was happy to join when asked, especially because... [Pg.81]

Public disappointment that scientific medicine can neither guarantee happiness nor wholly eliminate the disabilities of degenerative diseases in long-lived populations, as well as the fact that drugs used in modem medicine can cause serious harm, naturally lead to a revival of interest in alternatives that alluringly promise efficacy with complete safety. These range from revival of traditional medicine to adoption of the more modem cults. ... [Pg.12]
