Hansenula mannans from

Mannans of Hansenula capsulata Y-1842 and H. holstii Y-2448 differ structurally from the phosphonomannan components.83 The man-nan of H. capsulata is probably a cell-wall component, and it has the linear, repeating-structure 6. Other Pichia and Hansenula mannans have predominantly linear structures.84 The 13C-n.m.r. spectrum of 6 (see Fig. 2) is distinguishable from that of the branched-chain man-nan85 from Saccharomyces rouxii (repeating unit 7.)... [Pg.77]

Bretthauer and coworkers isolated from Hansenula holstii a particulate enzyme capable of catalyzing the transfer of D-man-nose- C from GDP-D-mannose- C to endogenous, mannan-acceptor molecules. The same particulate enzyme fraction was found to catalyze the transfer of phosphate- from GDP- P-D-mannose to endogenous mannan. Divalent-metal ions proved to be required, Mn + being the most eflFective for transfer of phosphate- and D-mannose- C. The incorporation of both phosphate- and D-mannose- C was inhibited to the extent of 70% by either 0.5 mM GMP or GDP. [Pg.398]

On the basis of the n.m.r. spectra of the cell-wall D-mannans, and the base composition and sequence similarities of the deoxyribonucleic acids, no distinction could be made between strains of Candida utilis and Hansenula jadinii although differences could be detected between H. jadinii and H. petersonii The catabolic and anabolic transformation of D-glucose by a Candida species into cell wall D-glucan and D-mannan has been reported.Approximately 20-40% of the hexose of these cell wall polysaccharides has been derived from the resynthesis of hexoses via the pentose phosphate pathway. [Pg.309]

Inhibition by 2-deoxy-D-arai>mn-hexose of the biosynthesis of the cell-wall mannan in Saccharomyces cerevisiae appears to involve a complex mechanism that disrupts the synthesis of protein rather than glycosylation. Studies using a particulate enzyme from Mycobacterium smegmatis have demonstrated that polyisoprenyl D-mannosyl phosphates are obligatory donors, while preparations obtained from Hansenula holstii have shown that a D-mannosyl-lipid is involved in the synthesis of mannosylated serine (or threonine) residues. ... [Pg.324]

A polysaccharide that is very closely related in structure to the teichoic acids is an O-phospho-D-mannan, elaborated by yeasts of the Hansenula genus. The polysaccharide differs from the usual teichoic acids in that the carbohydrate unit is an... [Pg.210]
