Hanging

The removal tests show important variations between products which do not influence the results because all penetrant can be washed easily. Resistance test to over washing give an evaluation of the hanging up of the product on the pieee and because the washing is an operation realized by an operator for our applications, they permit to have a good idea on the influency of this operation on the end of the test one operator who washes too much a penetrant increases the probability to make the indications desappear. 

This is exact—see Problem 11-8. Notice that Eq. 11-14 is exactly what one would write, assuming the meniscus to be hanging from the wall of the capillary and its weight to be supported by the vertical component of the surface tension, 7 cos 6, multiplied by the circumference of the capillary cross section, 2ar. Thus, once again, the mathematical identity of the concepts of surface tension and surface free energy is observed. 

It should be noted that here, as with capillary rise, there is an adsorbed film of vapor (see Section X-6D) with which the meniscus merges smoothly. The meniscus is not hanging from the plate but rather fiom a liquidlike film [53]. The correction for the weight of such film should be negligible, however. 

An alternative and probably now more widely used procedure is to raise the liquid level gradually until it just touches the hanging plate suspended from a balance. The increase in weight is then noted. A general equation is...

Next day, hang the paper from the edge of the fume-cupboard window in the full draught of the fan to dry, and immediately mark the position of the solvent front. 

Solvents with boiling points below 90-95°. A steam bath or water bath should be employed. Alternatively, the apparatus of Fig. 77,13, 3, but with a Alter flask as receiver, may be used the end of the rubber tubing attached to the tubulure is either placed in the sink or allowed to hang over the bench. If a distillation is ultimately to be conducted in the flask from which the solvent is removed, the apparatus depicted in Fig. 77,13, 4 is recommended the distilling flask may be replaced by a Claisen flask or a Claisen flask with fractionating side arm, particularly if the subsequent distillation is to be conducted under diminished pressure. 

What s left in the water now needs to be vacuum filtered and dried. This should be done carefully and under the fume hood. Up to this point the chemistry will have taken around 30 minutes, the drying might take a day or so. Often bromine liquid stays hanging around the crystals which makes them nasty, leave in the buchner funnel of your vacuum filter overnight to get rid of all that bromine. Unless all the bromine has gone, don t go near them without a fume cupboard or a mask.

Anodic stripping voltammetry consists of two steps (Figure 11.37). The vertical recessed plate automatic press is shown schematically in Figure 15. Unlike the conventional filter press with plates hanging down and linked in a horizontal direction, this filter press has the plates in a horizontal plane placed one upon another. This design offers semicontinuous operation, saving in floor space, and easy cleaning of the cloth, but it allows only the lower face of each chamber to be used for filtration.
