Flooding. When a stable rathole forms in a bin and fresh material is added, or when material falls into the channel from above, a flood can occur if the bulk sohd is a fine powder. As the powder falls into the channel, it becomes entrained in the air in the channel and becomes fluidized (aerated). When this fluidized material reaches the outlet, it is likely to flood from the bin, because most feeders are designed to handle sohds, not fluids (see Eluidization). Fimited Discharge Kate. Bulk sohds, especially fine powders, sometimes flow at a rate lower than required for a process. This flow rate limitation is often a function of the material s air or gas permeabihty. Plate-Column Capacity The maximum allowable capacity of a plate for handling gas and liquid flow is of primaiy importance because it fixes the minimum possible diameter of the column. For a constant hquid rate, increasing the gas rate results eventually in excessive entrainment and flooding. At the flood point it is difficult to obtain net downward flow of hquid, and any liquid fed to the column is carried out with the overheaa gas. Furthermore, the column inven-toiy of hquid increases, pressure drop across the column becomes quite large, and control becomes difficult. The diameter of a tower is established by the volume of vapors which must be handled and by the maximum allowable vapor velocity which can be tolerated without encountering excessive entrainment of liquid from one plate to the plate above. In larger vertical storage tanks containing residual fuels, bottom inlet filling may sometimes be used. A non-return valve must be fitted in the filling line as close to the tank as possible. The entry position of the filling pipe into the tank in relation to the position of the draw-off connection must be carefully selected to avoid air entrainment into the oil-handling system. [Pg.252]

Because reciprocating compressors should be supplied with clean gas, inlet filters are recommended in all applications. The hydraulic oil must provide adequate lubrication in the diverse operating conditions associated with the components of the various systems. It must function over an extended temperature range and sometimes under boundary conditions. The recommended method is from Guidelines for Pressure Relief and Effluent Handling Systems (AIChE-CCPS, 1998). It is an improvement over the method presented in the 7th edition of this Handbook. The procedure involves calculating a terminal velocity for a selected droplet size, then providing enough residence time in the vapor space to allow the droplets to fall from the top of the vessel to the level of liquid collected. Also, the vapor velocity in the separator must not exceed the value above which liquid may Be entrained from the liquid surface in the separator. The tank is treated as a simple horizontal cylinder, neglecting the volume of liquid in the heads. [Pg.88]
