Skin Irritation. Fine broken filaments often irritate the skin, occasionally causing transient itching and rashes. The back of hands and wrists and neck areas tend to be most sensitive. Protective clothing and barrier skin creams help prevent the fiber from reaching the skin and causing discomfort.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive disease which mainly affects the joints of the body. It is an inflammatory condition which follows a relapsing, remitting course, which can be very variable. The hands and wrists are most commonly affected although other joints may be involved. It is usual that the disease is found in symmetrical joints, although this is not always the case.

A 35-year-old man developed a subacute dermatitis with scattered patches of erythema and scahng on the lower legs, ankles, hands, and wrists. Involvement of the hands and wrists is common in rheumatoid arthritis. Hand involvement is manifested by pain, swelling, tenderness, and grip weakness during the acute phase, and by subluxation, instability, deformity, and muscle atrophy in the chronic phase of the disease. Functional difficulties with clasp, grasp, and pinch alter both strength and fine motor movement.

From the above position the elbow is flexed to 90" and the medial aspect of the arm is rested directly on the cassette. The hand and wrist are the most common sites of skeletal injury in children (Hastings and Simmons 1984), with fractures of the distal end of the radius being the most common (Landin 1997). Wrist fractures are usually the result of falls, the ubiquitous FOOSH (fall on out-stretched hand) on the X-ray request, or sports related injuries. Again these are common injuries of childhood, with 42% of all fractures of the radius and ulna occurring in children up to the age of 14 (Chung and Spilson 2001).
