Sports related injury

Due to the tremendous pressure placed on workers to be injury-free, a number of workplace injuries are never reported but are disguised to reappear as home or sport-related injuries. Why else in the United States would there be three home injuries for every one injury recorded in the workplace ... [Pg.27]

Musculoskeletal injuries in children fall into three main groups Accidental trauma such as road traffic accidents and falls, non-accidental injury (NAl) and sport related injury. For each of these groups specific injury patterns can be recognised that are unique to the growing skeleton. [Pg.43]

The hand and wrist are the most common sites of skeletal injury in children (Hastings and Simmons 1984), with fractures of the distal end of the radius being the most common (Landin 1997). Wrist fractures are usually the result of falls, the ubiquitous FOOSH (fall on out-stretched hand) on the X-ray request, or sports related injuries. Again these are common injuries of childhood, with 42% of all fractures of the radius and ulna occurring in children up to the age of 14 (Chung and Spilson 2001). [Pg.283]

Mechanical trauma accounts for a myriad of sports-related skin conditions. The majority are from acute trauma, with the rest a result of repeated mechanical trauma, for example, calluses and corns. Although these skin injuries are very frequent, most are minor and many are preventable. [Pg.1072]

Sports Medicine. Orthopedic specialists are trained to perform a comprehensive assessment, to treat, and to provide follow-up care to children, adolescents, and adults with sports-related orthopedic injuries. This is often accomplished with a team approach that includes sports medicine physicians and a physical therapy staff and results in the development of long-term treatment and activity plans. [Pg.1378]

The musculoskeletal system consists of the muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments. Disorders related to the musculoskeletal system often are classified by etiology. Acute soft-tissue injuries include strains and sprains of muscles and ligaments. Repeated movements in sports, exercise, work, or activities of daily living may lead to repetitive strain injury, where cumulative damage occurs to the muscles, ligaments, or tendons.1-3 While tendonitis and bursitis can arise from acute injury, more commonly these conditions occur as a result of chronic stress.3,4 Other forms of chronic musculoskeletal pain, such as pain from rheumatoid arthritis (see Chap. 54) or osteoarthritis (see Chap. 55), are discussed elsewhere in this text. [Pg.899]

At least one study examining athletic injuries cited the importance of appropriate rest periods and even noted increases in injuries when appropriate rest was less likely to occur (81). Others do not even mention the confounds of sleep and rest (82,83). In a PubMed search on injuries and sports (August 2002), only 4 of 14,529 articles listed had any information directly related to sleep. [Pg.326]
