A marker substance is injected into a central vein. A peripheral arterial line is used to measure the amount of the substance in the arterial system. A graph of concentration versus time is produced and patented algorithms based on the Stewart-Hamilton equation (below) are used to calculate the cardiac output. [Pg.64]

This proven host system was transferred to dendrimers by functionalising the periphery of POPAM dendrimers with the acyclic Hamilton variant (Fig. 6.13). After monofunctionalisation with an amino group on the isophthaloyl system, it could be multiply covalently bonded to the dendrimer. In this way, up to fourth-generation POPAM dendrimers could be peripherally embellished with barbiturate receptors. The mode of action of the individual dendrimers as multivalent... [Pg.208]

HDL, like LDL, is a cholesterol-rich particle, and is distinct from the other lipoprotein classes in that it does not contain apoB. HDL levels are inversely correlated with risk for atherosclerosis (Wilson et al., 1988). Nascent HDL particles are produced by direct synthesis (Hamilton, 1984), and excess surface remnants from chylomicrons and VLDL produced during the action of lipoprotein lipase (as noted above) enter the HDL density class. HDL appears to be involved in delivery of cholesterol to steroidogenic tissues as well as the removal of excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues and excretion from the system. This HDL-mediated removal of cholesterol has been termed reverse cholesterol transport (Glomset, 1968). Although apolipoproteins present in HDLs are cleared by the liver, the reverse cholesterol transport pathway has never been directly demonstrated. HDL can remove cholesterol from tissues, a process that may be partially mediated by interaction with a putative HDL receptor, with apoA-I as the ligand for that receptor (Oram el ai, 1983). The existence of an HDL receptor remains controversial saturable HDL binding may not be mediated by a specific apolipoprotein ligand and may not even be required for transfer of cholesterol from cells to... [Pg.307]

Between September 1995 and November 2000, 70 patients were vaccinated after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (ASCT ) with one of two formulations of Theratope (Biomira, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) coupled with Detox B SE (Detox B) (Corixa, Hamilton, MT). The difference between the two formulations was that the later one has an increased ratio of STn conjugated to KLH compared to the first formulation. The vaccination schedule for the two different formulations was previously published as well as medical treatment history of ASCT patients 18). [Pg.199]
