Halogenated butyl rubbers elastomer blends

As mentioned in Section 8.1.1, ethylene-propylene elastomers are currently used in compounds for tyre sidewalls. In this application also ternary blends have been used, including halogenated butyl rubber.With regard to EPDM and butyl rubber blends, there are no covulcanisation problems because both have a similar level of unsaturation. [Pg.127]

The most prevalent approach to achieve long-lasting and nonstaining ozone protection of rubber compounds is to use an inherently ozone-resistant, saturated backbone polymer in blends with a diene rubber. The ozone-resistant polymer must be used in sufficient concentration (minimum 25 phr) and must also be sufficiently dispersed to form domains that effectively block the continuous propagation of an ozone-initiated crack through the diene rubber phase within the compound. Elastomers such as ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers, halogenated butyl mbbers, or brominated isobutylene-co-para-methylstyrene elastomers have been proposed in combination with NR and/or butadiene rubber. [Pg.483]

Other thermoplastic elastomer combinations, in which the elastomer phase may or may not be cross-linked, include blends of polypropylene with nitrile (30,31), butyl (33), and natural (34) rubbers, blends of PVC with nitrile mbber (35,36), and blends of halogenated polyolefins with ethylene interpolymers (29). Collectively, thermoplastic elastomers of this type are referred to herein as hard polymer/elastomer combinations. In bromobutyl/chlorobutyl rubber blends, both elastomers have the polyisobutylene backbone and halogen reactive functionality. These polymers, being molecularly miscible, constitute an ideal system for co-vulcanization. Bromobutyl and chloro-butyl can be used interchangeably without significant effect on state of cure as measured by extension modulus, tensile strength, and cure rheometer torque development. Bromobutyl will increase the cure rate of a blend with chlorobutyl. However, where bromobutyl is the major part of the blends, chlorobutyl does not reduce scorch tendencies because the more reactive halogen unit can dominate. [Pg.186]
