Hallucinogens hallucinogen-induced psychotic disorder

Acute panic attacks and hallucinogen-induced psychotic disorder often occur when people with pre-existing personality disorder or pre-psychotic personalities use hallucinogens. Suicide and self-injury have been reported. Prolonged psychotic disorders can occur, but psychiatric opinion is divided as to whether these occur only in people with pre-existing disorders or in healthy individuals as well. Flashbacks occur particularly when there has been prolonged heavy use, but eventually disappear (SED-11, 83) (1,2). Self-injury and suicide can result (3). [Pg.563]

Glassification of Substance-Related Disorders. The DSM-IV classification system (1) divides substance-related disorders into two categories (/) substance use disorders, ie, abuse and dependence and (2) substance-induced disorders, intoxication, withdrawal, delirium, persisting dementia, persisting amnestic disorder, psychotic disorder, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, and sleep disorder. The different classes of substances addressed herein are alcohol, amphetamines, caffeine, caimabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, nicotine, opioids, phencyclidine, sedatives, hypnotics or anxiolytics, polysubstance, and others.
