Habitat-related properties

Dodd, R. S. and Afzal-Rafii, Z. (2000). Habitat-related adaptive properties of plant cuticular lipids. Evolution, 54,1438-1444. [Pg.199]

Related to diversity is the notion of static and dynamic stability in ecosystems. Traditional dogma stated that diverse ecosystems were more stable and therefore healthier than less rich ecosystems. The work of May in the early 1970s did much to question these almost unquestionable assumptions about properties of ecosystems. We certainly do not doubt the importance of biological diversity, but diversity itself may indicate the longevity and size of the habitat rather than the inherent properties of the ecosystem. Rarely are basic principles such as island biogeography incorporated into comparisons of species diversity when assessments of community health are made. Diversity should be examined closely as to its worth in determining xenobi-otic impacts upon biological communities. [Pg.21]

Most, possibly all of these peculiarities are related to the ephemeral nature of the habitat, for instance, the thick wall protects the cell from desiccation, while the high elasticity and the glass cover might prevent the cell from mechanical stress (Yang et al., 2009), for instance, when cysts and sand are mixed by a storm. Certainly, all these properties will influence excystment and cyst viability, and thus the dispersal success. [Pg.71]

From system positions seem unreasonable recommendations for implementation in forage production new fodder crops from plant species one way or another related to procenoses of tall weeds, for example, weeds with severe soil protection properties. An example is recommendation about cultivation for fodder mentioned above sosnovsky cow-parsnip [27] which did not lead to increased production of fodder bur caused the blockage this species many habitats suitable for its growth, in particular roadsides of roads and railways in the European part of Russia, other habitats with increased moisture and focal accumulation of nutrient elements. [Pg.288]
