Seven cohort studies have examined the risk of cancer among populations exposed to dichloromethane. Two studies observed an excess of pancreatic cancer, but the three others which reported on this tumour did not. One study observed an excess of liver and biliary tract cancers among longer-term employees. One study observed an excess of prostate cancer that appeared to increase with level of exposure. One study observed an excess of breast cancer and gynaecological cancers among women with the highest likelihood of exposure and another study observ ed an excess of cervical cancer. With the exception of the prostate cancer excess observed in one study, all the excesses were based on small numbers. No estimates of exposure levels were available for two of the six studies. [Pg.298]

Gynaecological surgery, because the vagina contains Bacteroides spp and other anaerobes, streptococci and coliforms (metronidazole and a cephalosporin are often used). [Pg.208]

Postsurgical adhesions are a common problem following major abdominal, gynaecological, and other forms of surgery. Adhesions are scars that form abnormal connections between tissue surfaces. Postsurgical adhesion formation is a natural consequence of... [Pg.1351]

NSAIDs soon found novel use in many clinical conditions. Patency of the ductus arteriosus in neonates, mastocytosis, dysmenorrhoea and other conditions are often remarkably improved by these drugs. At the same time, many adverse effects of NSAIDs can be interpreted as due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. In gynaecology, for example, NSAIDs were thus found to delay parturition and cause haemorrhagic complications in the mother, and to induce premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in the infant (for reviews see refs. 79 and 80). [Pg.13]

The differential diagnosis can be divided into intestinal (Table 1.2), gynaecological, urological and diseases of other compartments (mainly abdominal wall, psoas muscle, gallbladder, pancreas) (Abu-Yousef 2001). [Pg.8]

Physicians more trusting of natural healing on the other hand saw heroic medicine as dangerous, even murderous. Sharpe and Faden quote the assessment of J. Marion Sims, a famous gynaecological surgeon, writing in 1835 at the time of his graduation from medical school ... [Pg.4]
