Growth Rates in Nature

Newell, S. Y. (1993b). Membrane containing fungal mass and fungal specific growth rate in natural samples. In Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology, ed. [Pg.458]

Soil bacterial growth rates in nature seem to be far slower than those typical of soil bacteria grown in rich nutrient media in the laboratory (7). It has been concluded that microbial populations in... [Pg.7]

Farmed animals tend to be subjected to compounds that can be classified more easily as drugs. In some cases, animals may encounter compounds in nature that have considerable limitations in inclusion in the diets of farmed animals. An example is the inclusion of zearalenone (Figure 1) and its derivatives in animal diets these have anabolic and oestrogenic properties " and are permitted to be used in some areas of the world but are prohibited from use in others, such as European Union countries. Thus this compound and its reduced isomers (zearalenols, zeranols) improve growth rates in animals but can cause reproductive problems, especially in pigs. Ralgro, which is a commercially prepared derivative of zearalenone, is used as an ear implant in beef cattle as a growth promoter in... [Pg.92]

If results are obtained as a function of ozone concentration, in theory it should be possible to make extrapolations to ambient conditions by empirically fitting a relation to the concentration against time to cracking/crack growth rate. For natural rubber, there has been evidence that that the relation is broadly linear. [Pg.339]

The experiments described here are principally diagnostic in nature where cellular biomass was significantly enhanced in bottles after resource (iron or light) amendment, relative to control (or other) treatments, we infer that algal growth rates in the control (or other) treatments were limited by a deficiency in that resource. The statistical significance of differences between mean values of parameters measured in different treatments were assessed using a two-tailed r-test for comparisons between two treatments, or a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for comparisons between three or more treatments, at a confidence level of 95% (P = 0.05). [Pg.89]

Figure 5. Temperature and pressure dependence of growth rates of epitaxial diamond films on (111) planes of natural diamond crystals (gas pressure = 12, 66, and 162 torr, respectively) the maximum growth rate in the experiments, 3 pm h", was attained at a gas pressure of 760 torr. In another experiment, a higher growth rate was also achieved at atmospheric pressure (see Fig. 8).
