The polysulfide rubbers containing terminal mercaptan groups are vulcanized by oxidation of these groups to polysulfide groups. This condensation reaction involves splitting out a small amount of water. The oxidizing agents are selected from metallic peroxides in the presence of p-quinone dioxime [27]. [Pg.79]

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a type of synthetic polymer that has properties between the characteristics of plastics and rubber. It belongs to the thermoplastic elastomer group. Ionic polymers are a special class of polymeric materials having a hydrocarbon backbone containing pendant acid groups. These are then neutralized partially or fully to form salts. lonomeric TPEs are a class of ionic polymers in which properties of vulcanized rubber are combined with the ease of processing of thermoplastics. These polymers contain up to 10 mol% of ionic group. These ionomeric TPEs are typically prepared by copolymerization of a functionalized monomer with an olefinic unsamrated monomer or direct functionalization of a preformed polymer [68-71]. When two polymers interact or react with each other, they are likely to provide a compatible, even a miscible, blend. Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) interacts with chloro-sulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) forming partially miscible and miscible blends, respectively, due to the reaction between chlorosulfonic acid group and chlorine with epoxy group of ENR. Room temperature-vulcanizing (RTV), silicon rubbers make use of the room temperature reaction of certain groups that can be placed on polydimethylsiloxanes, which react with water.
