Gross Mechanism

This section is devoted to the identification of the steps that lead from starting material to product. [Pg.64]

Although for most reactions gross mechanisms can be written today with a good degree of assurance, no mechanism is known completely. There is much about the fine details that is still puzzling, and for some reactions even the gross mechanism is not yet clear. The problems involved are difficult because there are so many variables. Many examples are known where reactions proceed by different mechanisms under different conditions. In some cases there are several proposed mechanisms, each of which completely explains all the data. [Pg.274]

One definition of post-operative paralytic ileus is the failure of the patient to pass faeces or flatus within 60 hr. of the termination of a surgical abdominal operation . A somewhat similar condition may arise in cases of gross mechanical obstruction of the gut. It is well known also that operations involving handling of the gut or the peritoneum are especially liable to cause paralytic ileus. Peritonitis and post-operative pain, inadequately treated with morphia, also precipitate paralytic ileus. Pneumonia, meningitis and typhoid predispose to paralytic ileus, whilst severe hypothyroidism can also be complicated by a paralytic ileus. [Pg.210]

DR. DAVID STANBURY (Rice University) With regard to the problem of the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen, I have attempted to formalize some ideas regarding the constraints of thermodynamics in order to elucidate the probable character of cobalt complexes which may catalyze the oxygen electrode via binuclear peroxo-bridged intermediates. The following gross mechanism is presupposed ... [Pg.437]

In addition to the direct measurements of fiber-matrix interface properties discussed in Section 3.2, a number of testing techniques have been devised to assess the fiber-matrix interface bond quality by inference from the gross mechanical properties such as interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), translaminar or in-plane shear strength, and transverse tensile strength. These testing techniques invariably employ... [Pg.61]

Electrostatic Models. For polar reactions it is possible to develop an electrostatic model. This is necessarily an oversimplification, though it does allow the gross features of such systems to be delineated. Thus, when a complex and the free ligand both react with the same gross mechanism, it is possible to estimate the electrostatic contribution to the change in entropy of activation when the reaction is polar or ionic. Following Laidler (21) we can estimate the electrostatic contribution to the entropy of activation as ... [Pg.159]

The alkaline hydrolysis of esters has been studied in more detail, or at any rate more frequently, than any other chemical reaction, and results continue to appear in a steady stream. Since the gross mechanism is not in real doubt, this discussion will be limited mainly to the relationship between structure and reactivity in the reaction. The relationship can in most cases only be discussed for the overall reaction, which is, of course, of most immediate practical importance. Although it is of great interest to discover what effects structural changes may have on the separate steps of the reaction, it is only in the few cases where the oxygen exchange and hydrolysis reactions have been measured concurrently that this is possible. [Pg.164]

Mechanical carry-over is the entrainment of small droplets of boiler water in the separated steam. Since entrained boiler-water droplets contain solids in the same concentration and proportions as the boiler water, the amount of impurities in steam contributed by mechanical carry-over is the sum of all impurities ill the boilei water multiplied by the moisture content of the steam. Foaming of the boiler water results in gross mechanical carryover. The common causes of foaming are excessive boiler-water solids, excessive alkalinity or the presence of certain forms of organic mailer, such as oil. [Pg.1744]

It may also be noted that the pE values indicate the thermodynamic possibility of N2 reduction accompanied by CH20 oxidation. This is the gross mechanism mediated by nonphotosynthetic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. [Pg.284]

They subsequently (2) developed a one-dimensional mathematical model in the form of coupled differential and integro-differential equations, based on a gross mechanism for the chemical kinetics and on thermal feedback by wall-to-wall radiation, conduction in the tube wall, and convection between the gas stream and the wall. This model yielded results by numerical integration which were in good agreement with the experimental measurements for the 9.53-mm tube. For this tube diameter, the flows of unbumed gas for stable flames were in the turbulent regime. [Pg.83]

In a polarographic measurement one may, in favourable cases, determine the potentials, reversibility and electron equivalents for a given cathodic process. When combined with an analysis of products, these usually provide insights into the gross mechanism of reduction. By using Ej data (Table 7) as limits, one can arrange reductions in which some group may be altered cleanly before the triple bond is touched, or vice versa. At the same time, data comprise an approximate electro-philicity scale of alkynes towards cathodic electrons, that is, a sort of solution electron affinity . The practical and theoretical uses of these data appear in several places in this chapter. [Pg.327]

Such a model describes an underdamped oscillatory behavior with a sinusoidal period of 11 minutes and damping coefficient of 0.44. This period of oscillation corresponds to the "hunting swings of the sporangiophore therefore, it appears that our model accounts for the gross mechanical behavior of Phycomyces and its interaction with our measurement system. [Pg.410]

Questions about the gross mechanism that remain to be answered are whether the proton in the reactive protonated ester is on the carbonyl oxygen or on the ether oxygen, whether the attacking water molecule first adds or substitutes directly, and whether or not the transition state is highly polar. These questions are similar to those discussed earlier in connection with the hydrolysis of 8-propiolactone, and the possible transition states are similar to those in Table 7. Again, of course, the representations are of extreme transition states, and the true one may be intermediate. A decision in favor of one of these representations is to be taken as an abbreviated statement, the fuller description being that the particular transition state chosen is nearer the true one than any other. [Pg.141]

Fundamental investigations into the mechanical properties of RP constituents and into the gross mechanical properties of RPs have been termed micromechanics to indicate that the part of the RP under investigation is usually only a microscopically small part of the total RP. One of the principal goals of micro mechanics research is to develop analytical techniques for predicting elastic constants, stress-strain... [Pg.1026]

During the last century, an increasing number of structures of ET enzymes have become known by crystallographic means. Pathways for ET have been identified. The gross mechanisms follow the Marcus model. [Pg.303]

When spiropyrans are treated with acids they are converted into spiropyran salts , which exhibit photochromic behavior differing from that of the parent spiropyran compounds. The gross mechanism proposed is illustrated in Figure 14.9. In the dark at room temperature, the compounds give colored solutions due to the presence of the 0-protonated merocyanine species III. The open form is converted by irradiation with visible light to the iV-protonated spiro form IV. As spiropyrans are fairly strong bases in the open form but very weak bases in the clos spiro form, the charged species IV can lose a proton and the neutral species I can be actually formed. [Pg.362]
