Green chemistry course

Cannon discussed her experience entering the workforce as a new graduate in green chemistry. She is employed by Rohm and Haas s Electronic Materials Division and designs waveguide materials for optical electronic devices. Cannon also teaches the Introduction to Green Chemistry course at UMASS Lowell and an undergraduate and online course at UMASS Boston.

Development of a Green Chemistry Course at Davidson College... 

What this course accomplished at Davidson is not unique. Other standalone lecture courses in green chemistry have been developed by several people. These include, but are not limited to, courses developed by Penny Brothers (University of Auckland), A1 Matlack (University of Delaware), Terry Collins (Carnegie Mellon University), Richard Gurney (Simmons College), and Denyce Wicht (Suffolk University). At Davidson College and at other institutions, the development of novel green chemistry courses and the greening of traditional chemistry courses have been viewed as innovative by departments and administrators.

In this section we compare and contrast various pedagogical aspects of the above eight green chemistry courses. 

During 2012-2013 two surveys were circulated among the eight departments offering green chemistry courses one for students and the other for course instructors. There were 58 responses from students and five responses from instructors. Here we present typical responses to key questions from both surveys reflecting experiences from both undergraduate and faculty perspectives.

I really enjoyed the green chemistry course. It was very interesting. I think a lab would complement this course nicely, giving practical experience to the knowledge obtained in the course. This course works well as fourth year course allowing for the necessary background to be obtained as well as giving real life applications to chemistry. 

Because we need it. Many/most people are wasteful by default and this needs to be combated. A green chemistry course is an excellent idea. 

We did only one lab pertaining to green chemistry. There was nothing else to convince me to take a green chemistry course. 

If green chemistry was more of a priority in organic chemistry labs and integrated more efficiently, then I might recommend a green chemistry course to a friend. But, it seems like we do not have the necessary understanding to make it seem worthwhile. 

One lab has not significantly affected my experiences, but I can appreciate and understand how much of an impact a green chemistry course is making.
