Simmons College

What this course accomplished at Davidson is not unique. Other standalone lecture courses in green chemistry have been developed by several people. These include, but are not limited to, courses developed by Penny Brothers (University of Auckland), A1 Matlack (University of Delaware), Terry Collins (Carnegie Mellon University), Richard Gurney (Simmons College), and Denyce Wicht (Suffolk University). At Davidson College and at other institutions, the development of novel green chemistry courses and the greening of traditional chemistry courses have been viewed as innovative by departments and administrators. [Pg.24]

The author has consulted all the well-known texts on laboratory work in organic chemistry in the preparation of the book. In writing the directions for the preparation of compounds on a small scale, valuable help was obtained from S. P. Mulliken s "The Identification of Pure Organic Compounds." A number of experiments on fats, carbohydrates, and proteins have been adapted, with the permission of the author, from a laboratory manual in descriptive organic chemistry prepared for the use of students of household economics, by Professor Alice F. Blood, of Simmons College. The author wishes to express his thanks for the courtesy shown in granting permission to make use of this material. [Pg.225]

The authors are greatly indebted to Eaymond E. Neal, Instructor in Chemistry, Simmons College, for valuable suggestions and for the preparation of the drawings, from which the cuts were made. [Pg.6]

The author wishes to express his thanks to Prof. W. T. Hall, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Prof. Alice F. Blood, of Simmons College, for valuable criticism and suggestions. He is especially grateful to his wife, who copied the entire manuscript of the book, assisted in proof-reading, and helped in many ways that made the preparation of the book possible. [Pg.640]
