Greek letters alphabet

Dimensional and mathematical symbols used in this Code are listed in Mandatory Appendix IV, with definitions. Uppercase and lowercase English letters are listed alphabetically, followed by Greek letters. 

Let me make a table to help unravel the codes used for variously substituted tryptamines. First, there can be things that are never considered in alphabetizing, things that are locators of groups, and they always come first in any code. And, the numbers preceed the Greek letters, which preceed the atom symbols, all separated by commas. As examples ... 

When more than one page reference is given, bold print is used to indicate the most useful general reference. Greek letters are spelled out and accents are ignored in alphabetical ordering. 

Greek letters are treated as a form of latin letters sounding similar other symbols and numbers are at the beginning of the alphabet. 

All the ternaries containing Bi, Sb and As, that have been synthesized and isolated are collected in Table 1. Numerous other phases have been observed, but always in admixture with other compounds, so these phases are not indicated in this table. It is important to emphasize that in every system the intercalated metallic sheets exhibit often various compositions and orderings. These are distinguished by greek letters in order of their respective thicknesses the thicker the intercalated sheet, the later the corresponding letter in the alphabet. In all these systems, the 2D and 6 -axis orderings of the intercalated sheets are generally complicated . Last, in the same table, the best synthesis conditions are indicated for every phase. 

Abbreviations are listed in alphabetical order without regard to case. Entries beginning with Greek letters fall at the end of the table. 

When using the list of sjonbols, as is done in the following pages, the use of the same symbol for more than one concept is to be avoided. The Latin alphabet proves to be insufficient for this purpose, so that Greek letters have had to be added, whilst further variations have been made possible by the addition of suffixes [12]. 

Entries are listed in alphabetical order. The main entry title is printed in bold type, followed by synonyms in bold italics. Numbers, Greek letters and configurational numbers/letters at the beginning of the name are ignored when allocating in alphabetical order, e.g. O-Acyl isopeptide method is listed under A, aj -macroglobulin is listed under M, while 8-quinolyl ester is listed under Q. 

Statisticians normally use Latin sjrmbols to represent sample values, reserving the Greek alphabet for population parameters. Following this convention, we represent the population mean and standard deviation of our example by the Greek letters p and a, respectively. What can we infer about the values of these parameters, knowing the sample values xand s ... 

Algebra is a lot like arithmetic but deals with symbolic variables in addition to numbers. Very often these include x, y, and/or z, especially for unknown quantities, which is often your job to solve for. Earlier letters of the alphabet such d a,b,c... are often used for constants, quantities whose values are determined by assumed conditions before you solve a particular problem. Most Enghsh letters find use somewhere as either variables or constants. Remember that variables are case sensitive, so X designates a different quantity than X. As the number of mathematical symbols in a technical subject proliferate, the English (really Latin) alphabet becomes inadequate to name all the needed variables. So Greek letters have to be used in addition. Here are the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet ...

The carboxylic acid group is ignored and the next carbon is a-, then P-, y-, etc. until the last caibon which is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, CD-. The system then counts backwards from ffl, so we have 1, 2, 3, etc. Thus EPA, which is an essential fatty add found in fish oU, is classified as a 3 fatty add. (Chemists (who claim to be the prima donnas of chemical nomenclature) pr er to label the last carbon n , so chemists refer to nl, n2, n3, etc.)...

Beta adj. A prefix, usually abbreviated as the Greek letter jS and usually ignored in alphabetizing compound names, signifying that the so-labeled substitution is on the second carbon atom away from the main functional group of the molecule. 

Note The carbon atoms which in the older system were labelled by Greek letters in alphabetical order, beginning next to the carboxyl group, are now numbered from the carboxyl group, but with that numbered as 1, so that substitution begins on the next or 2 carbon. 

Brockmann [1] has given group names for each hydroxylation pattern, individual members are then designated by greek letters in alphabetical order with increasing Rf value. However, the system has not always been adhered to if mote than one name has been given to any one anthracyclinone, then the name consistent with Brockmann s scheme is quoted in the table.
