Grammar and punctuation

The feedback on my essay says that I have problems with my grammar and punctuation. What does that mean  

Your writing is incoherent. I cannot follow your argument. 

There seems to be no linkage between your ideas.

Proofreading puts your essay under the strongest lens. You will check within each word for errors in spelling, and also correct any other mechanics mistakes, such as grammar and punctuation.

As with freewriting, do not edit or censor any ideas, and ignore the rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. When you are finished, look over the list carefully. Cross out useless information, and organize what is left. Categorize similar items. 

Don t get put off by the third requirement. Scorers know you have just 25 minutes to write your essay, so they don t expect perfect grammar and punctuation (although it certainly won t hurt ). They will look for word choices that reflect a strong vocabulary (avoid cliches and slang), variety in sentence structure, and logical development of ideas. We ll go into greater detail about essay specifics in Chapter 3. 

This essay is inconsistent. While some elements may be adequate, such as demonstration of critical thinking skills or use of appropriate examples, others are weak. It may lose focus and provide evidence for some points but not others. There will be little or no variety in sentence structure, and a number of errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 

Read aloud in order to check your grammar and punctuation for the ways in which they affect the meaning. 

It is inportant to write using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Incorrect spelling, incorrect grammar, incorrect word usage, and incorrect punctuation make a poor inpression on the reader. They can deflect attention from quality technical work. There is no reason for incorrecdy spelled words in any report. Spell checkers identify incorrecdy spelled words for you, and they also identify words that are often confused with each other. You still must proofread carefully, since a spell checker will not identify a correctly spelled incorrect word e.g., too instead of two ). 

A few dozen grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization mistakes account for the majority of common writing errors. Once you become acquainted with these common errors and learn how to avoid or correct them, your writing will greatly improve. Therefore, this section on mechanics will focus on the errors that occur most frequently. 

No matter how great an idea you come up with, or how persuasively you can argue a point, an inability to express yourself clearly and accurately through the written word will hinder your success. Your writing must demonstrate that you are smart, accurate, and dependable because you are using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. 

Proofread your essay carefully for any errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. 

Mechanics refers to the standard practices for the presentation of words and sentences, including capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. As with grammar, there are many rules for mechanics, but here we will cover the ones that cause essay writers the most problems. See the Appendix for more thorough grammar and mechanics resources. 

How consistent was your style (paragraphing), grammar, spelling, and punctuation Did you express yourself freshly and uniquely ... 

Some timed exams penalize for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors in mechanics. All exams take off points for incomplete answers and failure to address the prompt. Leave some time to go over your work and correct or improve any errors. Be prepared to spend between 2-5 minutes editing and proofreading your essay. Check for the following ... 

Grammar and mechanics Check for typos and errors in spelling, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and word usage (e.g., effect vs. affect, data). 

Grammar and mechanics Haes pays careful attention to parallelism and punctuation, most notably in her enumerated lists. Haes s lists are grammatically parallel, and she uses punctuation (i.e., colons, commas, and semicolons) appropriately. 

Revise and edit the entire section, paying careful attention to audience (e.g., level of detail, word choice), organization, writing conventions (e.g., verb tenses, voice, personal pronouns, formatting of lists, and citations), and grammar and mechanics (e.g., parallelism, punctuation). Revise the Goals and Importance section so that the individual parts work... 

Don t forget to look for and correct mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation (see the box below). 

In this portion of the test, you will be tested on errors in grammar, expression, or style. Examples will include mistakes in word choice, sentence structure, grammar, usage, and punctuation. You will need to know how to identify ... 

The following sentences test correctness and effectiveness of expression. In choosing answers, follow the requirements of standard written English in other words, pay attention to grammar, choice of words, sentence construction, and punctuation. 

Know your enemies. Learn to identify your particularly troublesome areas in punctuation and grammar and then read through your draft for one of these problems at a time once for fragments, once for comma splices, once for run-ons, and so on. (If you try to look for too many errors at each reading, you ll probably miss quite a few.)... 

When you have done this, rewrite your final version in the master-scene format used in screenplay manuscripts. (Look at the examples in previous chapters or in the Appendices.) At this point, it would be wise to check grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
