This senses the speed of the machine and performs extremely fast and accurate adjustments in the fuel supply to the PM. In turn it regulates the speed and the output of the PM within predefined limits, depending upon the droop of the PM. The governor may be a mechanical (manual), hydraulic or electronic (automatic) device. 

The final element in this case is speed control. This mechanism varies the turbine-governor speed setting over a predetermined range. 

Engine speed is controlled by the use of variable-speed governors that can be mechanical, mechanical-hydraulic or electronic. The last option is gaining wide acceptance for generation purposes due to its speed of response and ready integration with other control equipment used in fully automated installations (probably incorporating more than one generating unit). 

Though combustion control has been studied and utilized for nearly a century beginning from the use of mechanical governors in steam engines, as the engines become more complex, correspondingly more complex control systems are required to maintain the desired level of performance. Further, each additional component used to control, and the system as a whole, should be as reliable as the least reliable other component in the propulsion unit. Also, the propulsion device should be able to operate without unacceptable performance penalty in case the control fails.
