Gonadotropin secretion

Prosta.te Ca.ncer, Estrogen has an inhibitory effect on the prostate in addition to its suppression of gonadotropin secretion by the pituitary. The three- and five-year survival rates in prostate cancer patients with metastatic disease improved when treated with DES (7) alone or along with castration. However, DES does not improve the survival rates in patients whose carcinoma is confined to the prostate. Small doses of DES (1 mg/d) appear to retard prostate cancer growth and could reduce the cardiovascular complications associated with larger doses (5 mg/d) (135) (see... [Pg.244]

Finasteride inhibits 5a-reductase, the enzyme converting T. into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Thus, the androgenic stimulus is reduced in those tissues in which DHT is the active species (e.g., prostate). T.-dependent tissues or functions are not or hardly affected (e.g., skeletal muscle, negative feedback inhibition of gonadotropin secretion, and libido). Finasteride can be used in benign prostate hyperplasia to shrink the gland and, possibly, to improve micturition. [Pg.252]

It has a potent antiandrogen and mild progestional activity. It can also inhibit gonadotropin secretion in larger dose and also suppresses spermatogenesis and Leydig cell function. It is used in precocious puberty in males, acne, carcinoma prostate and hirsutism and virilization in women. [Pg.291]
