As shown in Fig. 10-13, there is also a flux of O2 produced during net photosynthesis from the ocean to the atmosphere and an export flux of particulate and dissolved organic matter out of the euphotic zone. For a steady-state system, new production should equal the flux of O2 to the atmosphere and the export of organic carbon (Eppley and Peterson, 1979) (when all are expressed in the same units, e.g., moles of carbon). Such an ideal state probably rarely exists because the euphotic zone is a dynamic place. Unfortunately, there have been no studies where all three fluxes were measured at the same time. Part of the difficulty is that each flux needs to be integrated over different time scales. The oxygen flux approach has been applied in the subarctic north Pacific (Emerson et al, 1991) and subtropical Pacific (Emerson et al, 1995, 1997) and Atlantic (Jenkins and Goldman, 1985). Goldman has studied the effect of nonclassical behavior on the solubility of helium, hydrogen, and neon in simple solvents and benzene (2J3). He has discussed the Henry s constant of water as a solute 24). So far his results do not apply to water as a solvent. 

The effect of LSD on cerebral blood flow was studied in the rat (Goldman et al. 1975). An intravenous injection of LSD increased blood flow to frontal and parietal cortex within 10 minutes, and to the cerebellum within 20 minutes. Increases (significant or nonsignificant) were evidenced in all brain areas assessed, except for the hippocampus, where a minor, nonsignificant reduction was noted. 

Dibromoethane can induce developmental effects in rodents (Short et al. 1978, 1979 Smith and Goldman 1983). The results of these studies indicate that 1,2-dibromoethane is more toxic to pregnant mice than pregnant rats (Short et al. 1978). It produces maternal toxicity as evidenced by decreases in food consumption, body weight gain, and survival (Short et al. 1978, 1979). Developmental effects observed include anatomical and skeletal defects and reduced survival of fetuses. However, these adverse developmental effects have been observed in animals at doses that induce maternal toxicity.

The effect of temperature on the viscosity of nitrocellulose solutions has been studied by many authors, e.g. Nishida [68], Drinberg [62], E. Karrer et al. [69], Kozlov [70] and Goldman [71]. These experiments showed that the viscosity of concentrated nitrocellulose solutions is lowered more quickly, the higher the concentration of the solution. Attempts were made by E. Karrer, Berl and Umstatter [69] to find a formula expressing the relationship between the viscosity and the temperature (from 20 to 48°C). Shor [72] has examined the viscosity of nitrocellulose solutions within the concentrations range 14.9-17.9% and at temperatures from 0 to 40°C. On the basis of a mathematical analysis of the numerical results, the author has deduced the following formula ... 

The use of trifluoroacetic anhydride for the activation of DMSO in the oxidation of alcohols was first attempted by Albright and Goldman in 196 5.119,120 According to these authors, who tried the reaction at room temperature, trifluoroacetic anhydride is not effective in the activation of DMSO. Later, Swern et al. made a detailed study of the interaction of DMSO with TFAA,121 and proved that the resulting activated DMSO is stable at low temperature and can be used in the oxidation of alcohols.
