Gold - Water-soluble gold porphyrin ions, [Au(TPPS4)]3 and [Au(TMPyP)]5+ (as the 3- and 4-pyridyl isomers), were obtained from the respective free-base porphyrins in a mixture of water/pyridine/lithium chloride containing KAuCl4 [142]. The products were purified by extraction with acetone and methanol and subsequent HPLC, however, the counterions were not determined. 

Natural materials can be found in many forms in museum collections. The items in this photograph include wool, cotton, wood, leather, dried plant materials, paints, and metal alloys. Rug/carpet kurdish mid-twentieth century wool on cotton, naturalpigments/dye. Basket Hopi piki-bread tray, wicker, early twentieth century. Kachina c. 1970 cottonwood root with water-based (poster) paint, fabric, wool, feathers, yarn, fur ruff, unsigned (cloth "cape is also painted). Books calfskin, marbled paper, gold. Apart from latexes, S-FFF has been used to fractionate and determine the size distribution of numerous industrial colloids including water-based titanium dioxide dispersions [6,171], carbon black dispersions [6],phthalocyanineblue [6], various silica sols [141,171,176], gold and silver sols [385], pigments, metal and ceramic particles, clay and a host of latexes [294]. Gold, palladium, silver and copper particles in the size range 0.3-15 pm were separated by steric-S-FFF and their size distributions determined in less than 12 min [69]. 

Perhaps the biggest advantage of a water-based synthesis procedure is that bioconjugation of the gold and other metal/semiconductor nanopartides with DNA [32], enzymes [62], antibodies [63] etc. may be easily accomplished.

When we think of solutions, we normally think of a solution formed by dissolving a solid (e.g., sugar) in a liquid (e.g., water). In reality, any combination of the three states can be considered a solution. In fact, air is a solution which is a mixture of various gases. Carbonated water (soda) is a mixture of a gas (CO ) dissolved in a liquid (H O). Even alloys such as gold-silver alloys are solutions containing two solids. A true solution is a solution which has only one solvent with one or more solutes. In this chapter, we will be limiting our discussion mostly to water based solutions because of their versatility and importance to life sciences. We will discuss various aspects such as solubility of compounds, and precipitation reactions.

In the Olympics of temporary chemical signaling, calcium wins a gold medal, magnesium takes silver, and zinc would be a possible bronze. Any organism using the periodic table in water-based systems would come to the same conclusion, so I expect that calcium signaling is a universal feature of life. 

In this chapter, recent developments in electrode materials and ionic polymer membranes used for manufacturing IPMCs were reviewed. Although noble metals such as platinum and gold are commonly used for electrodes in water-based systems and applications for their excellent electrochemical properties, also various nonmetallic conductive carbon derivatives are considered as promising alternatives for fabricating dry-type IPMC actuators.
