Gold transmutation into

Such a conversion of one element into another is called trans-, mutation. Today scientists realize that one element cannot be changed, or transmuted, into another element in the sense meant by the alchemists, that is, by means of a chemical reaction. In modem times scientists have learned how to change other ele- j ments into gold, but not by chemical reaction. The artificial gold prepared in this manner is more expensive than natural gold, and so the method is not useful commercially. 

It must be borne in mind when reviewing the theories of the alchemists, that there were a number of phenomena known at the time, the superficial examination of which would naturally engender a belief that the transmutation of the metals was a common occurrence. For example, the deposition of copper on iron when immersed in a solution of a copper salt e.g., blue vitriol) was naturally concluded to be a transmutation of iron into copper, although, had the alchemists examined the residual liquid, they would have found that the two metals had merely exchanged places and the fact that white and yellow alloys of copper with arsenic and other substances could be produced, pointed to the possibility of transmuting copper into silver and gold. It was also known that if water (and this is tme of distilled water which does not contain solid matter in solution) was boiled for some time in a glass flask, some solid, earthy matter was produced and if water could be transmuted into earth, surely one metal could be... 

You may recall that the preparation of philosophical mercury was one of the steps toward creating the Philosopher s Stone. Boyle must have believed that he had learned a great secret indeed. He must have become even more excited when he discovered that heat was produced when this mercury was used to dissolve gold. According to alchemical theory, the heat was a sign that some of the mercury was being transmuted into gold. 

How do we explain this difference from the fate of empires in Europe It was the task of nationalism to invent the new nation-states for the post-1945 world, but was this nationalism a different beast altogether from that of Europe Could we imagine nationalism in Europe sanctifying the multi-ethnic borders created by the Hapsburgs, Romanovs and Ottomans, as we do in Asia for the empires of British, Dutch, Spanish, French and Manchus If Asian nation-states were to perform this transformation from the immense variety and antiquity of their ethnic, political and civilisational forms, without fragmenting the leviathans of imperial construction, they would require a kind of magic—the imperial alchemy of my title. The base metal of empire would have to be transmuted into the gold of nationhood. 

You are the lead which is transmuted into pure gold. As with any new skill, we start with simple things and progress to more complex operations as our skill and experience lead us. We have to make a start somewhere, and these simple procedures form the beginnings of a fascinating process of self-transformation.

single atoms, the recoil technique was applied (Fig. 14.6). Es was electrolytically deposited on a thin gold foil. The recoiling atoms of Md were sampled on a catcher foil. After irradiation, the catcher foil was dissolved and Md was separated on a cation-exchange resin. In 8 experiments 17 atoms of Md were detected and identified by their transmutation into the spontaneously fissioning the properties of which were known ... 

Three months later, Flamel made his first transmutation into gold. For a long time he was worried that Perrenelle, who was oveijoyed at the final outcome of so many years of experiments. 

Take one part of this Tincture, wrapped in paper, project the same on 1000 parts heated quicksilver, and it will become transmuted into fine gold. 

Take one part of the second Tincture, and project it on copper in fusion, and it will be transmuted into gold of a very red color. 

Project some of the second Tincture on red hot iron, insert the iron again into the blaze, and it will be transmuted into brittle gold. 

Like almost every Western scientist and philosopher up to the 17th century, alchemists unquestioningly accepted Aristotle s theory of the Universe. According to him, all material things in the world were composed of varying proportions of the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. But substances could be altered into other substances by the appropriate application of one of the four qualities of wetness, dryness, cold, or heat. This idea of change was fundamental to Ae alchemist s belief that base metals could be transmuted into gold.
